Woody Allen has announced his retirement from filmmaking and that his upcoming picture will be his last.

While in Europe to work on his 50th film, the director, writer, actor, and comedian, 86, told Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia that he intended to retire from making films and dedicate more time to writing.

‘My idea, in principle, is not to make more movies and focus on writing,’ he explained, adding that his next project will be a novel.

What is now set to be his final film, Wasp 22, is set in Paris and will be shot entirely in French in a couple of weeks.

He previously hinted at his retirement in an interview with Alec Baldwin, in which he said he would ‘probably make at least one more movie.’

‘A lot of the thrill is gone,’ he continued.

‘When I used to do a film it’d go into a movie house all across the country.

‘Now you do a movie and you get a couple weeks in a movie house.

‘Maybe six weeks or four weeks and then it goes right to streaming or pay-per-view… It’s not the same… It’s not as enjoyable to me.’

The news comes after the disgraced director was largely blackballed from working following allegations of assault towards his daughter, Dylan Farrow, whom he shares with ex Mia Farrow.

While he has always strongly denied the allegations, the scandal has plagued his career ever since.

Amazon Studios shelved his previous film, A Rainy Day in New York, after accusing Allen of ‘sabotaging’ the future of the film by comments made by the director about the accusations.

He sued them for $68million (£59million), alleging a breach of contract. The dispute was later settled out of court.

The publication of his memoir, Apropos of Nothing, was also cancelled by publishing house Hachette before being picked up by Arcade.

Various actors have said they now will not work with the director, including Kate Winslet, Colin Firth and Little Women director Greta Gerwig.

The allegations were showcased in HBO documentary, Allen v Farrow, which aired in 2021.
