Harry Styles, Olivia Wilde and the cast of Don’t Worry Darling reunited for a New York photocall ahead of the film’s release this week – but not everyone was there.

Florence Pugh, who stars as the lead in the psychological thriller alongside former One Direction icon Harry, has attended very few press events for her newest film, with the official reason being that she is busy filming Dune 2.

Gossip around the psychological thriller has been well documented, with the rumour mill spewing everything from tension between Florence and Olivia to bizarre – and untrue – claims that Harry spit on co-star Chris Pine on live TV.

It had also been rumoured that Florence would miss the New York premiere of Don’t Worry Darling due to filming Dune, and on Tuesday proved true as the film’s leading woman was notably absent.

Also missing was supporting actor Chris, though it’s unlikely due to ‘spitgate,’ which Harry jokingly mentioned in a recent show at Madison Square Garden.

Despite the drama, on Monday Harry, director Olivia and other cast members including Gemma Chan and Douglas Smith gathered for one of the final publicity pushes ahead of the film’s release this week.

With her cast gathered at the iconic AMC Lincoln Square Theatre in the Big Apple, Olivia was pictured beaming with pride, with Don’t Worry Darling representing her second time directing a feature-length film.

Her directorial debut, 2019’s Booksmart, was released to rave reviews from the public and critics alike, with DWD garnering major interest from the get-go.

Interest in the film was certainly not dampened by the addition of singer Harry to the cast, who plays Florence’s husband and who may or may not be hiding a dark secret (spoiler: he totally is.)

Harry, 28, and Olivia, 38, struck up a romance after first meeting on set, with the filmmaker having watched the singer perform multiple times on his Love On Tour, even bringing her children to the show.

During the film’s press events however the pair are strictly professional, with further photos from the night showing Olivia with her arms around cast members Nick Kroll and Kate Berlant for a group photo.

Harry, meanwhile, is at the other side of the group shot, huddled up with Don’ Worry Darling writer Katie Silberman and actress Sydney Chandler, followed by Doughlas Smith and Asif Ali.

The cast each showed off their own unique sense of style, with Harry in a smart casual button jacket and collar, Sydney in a gorgeous body-hugging sleek black dres and Asif wearing an oversized pinstripe suit and trainers.

Olivia, meanwhile, also looked classy in a floor-length black dress and her honey-coloured hair loose around her shoulders, with actor Nick wore an all-maroon suit and Gemma looked incredible in a fluffy powder-blue gown.

It’s just a few days before the public can hit the theatres and check out one of this year’s most talked-about films with their own eyes – but for now the conversation is still firmly on the rumoured drama.

There have been wildly varying claims from sources who worked on the set, with some insisting there is tension between Olivia and Florence, and others insisting there was no drama whatsoever and the set was a ‘harmonious’ place.

Cinematographer Matthew Litique told the Hollywood Reporter’s Behind The Screen podcast: ‘When I hear that there are rumours of acrimony on the set, I just reject it. It wasn’t apparent at all to be honest.’

He added that if anything did happen, it was ‘way after’ he left and ‘started doing something else’, saying: ‘I was never witness to anything and I didn’t feel anything. You know, you get a feeling that there might be something going on, and I didn’t feel anything.’

Libatique added: ‘From my standpoint the stories are completely untrue when it comes to being on set, I can’t speak for post-production at all.’

Plenty of unnamed sources have given their two cents on the drama, with one person who worked on the set telling Rollnig Stone there is ‘friction’ between Florence and Olivia ‘‘but I don’t know why.’

Two other sources suggested the rumoured friction began in 2020, when Olivia and Harry began a romantic relationship.

However yet another disputed that, saying it was ‘fun and enjoyable’ on set.

Others reportedly blamed sexism for the criticism, saying there would be no such spotlight on the rumours had the director been a man, while one said tension on the set ‘just didn’t exist.’

It comes after Florence finally spoke about the premiere at the Venice Film Festival, calling it ‘mega’ – but flatly ignoring all the genuinely awe-inspiring drama around it.

Don’t Worry Darling is in theatres on 23 September.
