Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield infuriated the nation last week after they appeared to skip the queue to see the Queen lying in state.
The This Morning presenters were fiercely criticised on social media after they were photographed inside Westminster Hall on Friday without taking part in the public line.
They pair addressed the backlash on Tuesday’s episode of This Morning, insisting that they followed the rules set for broadcasters and journalists and didn’t take anyone’s place in the line, which at one point could be seen from space.
Since reports emerged, however, a petition calling Willoughby and Schofield to be axed from the ITV show has received over 13,000 signatures.
Celebrities haven’t held back in calling them out either, with the likes of Huw Edwards and Eamonn Holmes taking aim.

Huw Edwards took aim at Willoughby and Schofield during BBC News while pointing out the celebrities who were spotted standing in line.
‘There have been quite a few familiar faces in the queue for that lying in state at Westminster Hall,’ Edwards began.
‘We did of course see a certain David Beckham there on Friday. He was widely praised for queueing for hours and hours, not jumping the queue because he’s a superstar VIP.
‘No, he was in the queue for many hours and good for him.’
Viewers were quick to notice the jibe, with one commenting: ‘Loving the fact Huw Edwards has just had a pop at Holly and Phil live on air.’
Eamonn Holmes

Eamonn Holmes shocked his GB News co-stars with a particularly savage dig at his former co-stars Willoughby and Schofield live on air.
The presenter took aim at his ex-colleagues when his co-host Isabel Webster introduced a guest was in the queue to see the Queen lying in state.
She said: ‘They were not of any insignificant age, we’ll be talking to them after this…’
Seizing the moment to take a swipe, Holmes interrupted: ‘What, Holly and Phillip?’

Former This Morning presenter Fern Britton also appeared to weigh in on the drama.
After photographs of the duo emerged last week, the television host seemingly took a swipe at their actions, and tweeted: ‘There’s a VIP line?’
Replying to her post, Kirstie Allsopp said: ‘There better not be, those with access to the Palace of Westminster seem the be finding a way, which is unwise in my view, but otherwise no. I queued to see The Queen Mum, I’ll never forget it.’

Have any celebrities defended Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield?
Despite the backlash, some celebrities have voiced their support for the pair.
Ant Middleton was among them and urged the naysayers to give Willoughby and Schofield a break.
He wrote: ‘U don’t want “Celebs” to be treated different to the general public (I agree) but yet you also want them held accountable to propaganda, hearsay & every word they say!
‘They ARE treated differently and trust me when I say in a disadvantaged way! #ShoeFoot.’

The Chase presenter Anne Hegerty also jumped to the duo’s defence, saying: ‘My understanding is that Holly and Phil weren’t in a VIP line, they were in a press line and about to do a piece to camera.’
She also commented: ‘When you work, it’s a gig. When you get paid for that work, it’s a paid gig,’ and in a separate tweet, addressed the backlash, writing: ‘You’re all being extremely rude.’
