Heard it all before
Amazing to see such a massive leak for GTA 6. Whoever’s in charge of Rockstar’s cyber security had better be polishing up their CV real good. Also, I love how you could tell the hacker was a young British kid just from the username and Dr Evil style demand for a five figure ransom.
The most interesting thing to me though was that we learnt essentially nothing about the game. The rumours already said it was set in Vice City, with male and female leads, so I’m not sure what else was really revealed? That the game will have shooting in it? That you’ll be able to rob places? I sure hope the hacker who has just ruined their life over this feels it was all worth it.
I’ve seen the videos and they really show nothing new. It’s not even clear whether it’s still (temporarily) using the GTA 5 graphics or not. To be honest, I would’ve been much more interested in hearing about Bully 2, as that’s something we don’t know for sure is coming.
It is a shame to have things spoiled like this, but the lack of information is an incitement to some people and Rockstar really should have better safeguards in place than this.

No spoiler warning
Well, seems that a lot of the rumours about GTA 6 are true. I won’t go into details here in case people don’t want to know, though they may now need to avoid the internet for a couple of years as there’s been a huge leak. Perhaps the biggest gaming leak ever?
I feel bad for Rockstar, because they’re clearly too far into development to be able to make substantial changes based on the information now being in the public. If I were them, I would very quickly make some sort of trailer and formally announce the game.

GC: As the reader above said, there weren’t really any new details to spoil. We’re not sure what you’re alluding to.
A sign of things to come
So that GTA 6 leak was certainly an event, eh? Considering how sarcastic and irreverent they are about everything else it was weird to see Rockstar acting as if it was the crime of the century. I mean, in terms of video game hacking leaks I suppose it was, but it didn’t actually reveal much and nobody was hurt.
All this business about developers being upset and Rockstar having to assure everyone that the game won’t be delayed… why would it be delayed? Because a 10 second video revealed you’ll be able to shoot people in the new game? It all seems unnecessarily dramatic, especially given how early on everything is.
To be honest publishers better get used to things like this as I suspect this was made possible because of needing to allow people to work from home, and putting more on online servers than they might otherwise have done. It’s unfortunate but in an absence of new some people will always seek their own.

Two endings
With all the talk of Call Of Duty becoming an Xbox exclusive in a set number of years I’m more concerned with what’s going to happen with Doom and Wolfenstein. These have been my favourite Bethesda games of recent years and yet they’re both in the same position, where they’re waiting on the final entry in their current trilogies, but we haven’t heard anything about them yet.
Are these games going to happen? Will I, as a PlayStation 5 owner, be able to play them? There seems to me there’s a very good chance I won’t. When Microsoft first took over there was an assumption that existing franchises would stay multiformat but that’s been proven wrong thanks to The Elder Scrolls 6.
I’m not in favour of any acquisitions and before someone says something about Sony I wish they wouldn’t do it either. Every company should be independent, in my opinion.

Brothers in arms
Is no one else worried that the guy that helped invent Call Of Duty is now in charge of Battlefield? Because those games are about as different as two military shooters could be and I really don’t want to see Battlefield turn into Call Of Duty.
Given how even DICE don’t seem to understand the series now I have really worries about such a person taking over. Although I suppose we’re in a position now where things literally couldn’t get any worse but I’d feel a lot more confident knowing someone that worked on the original games was in charge and not the guy that invented its complete opposite.

Filling the void
So two big leaks in just one day, with GTA 6 and Diablo 4? I’m not especially interested in either game but it’s clear that this is becoming a big problem. The less publishers tell us about their games the more effort people make to try and find out unofficially, and it seems that’s a lot easier than you’d think.
There’s basically no chance that someone isn’t going to leak details from a beta like Diablo 4 and I can only assume publishers are counting on it for publicity, because if they really didn’t want it getting out then they’re really not making an effort to stop it.
I’m very curious to see if in the next 12 months we start to see games being promoted the same way they were pre-pandemic. Nowadays we barely hear anything about a game until a couple of months before it’s out and I think publishers have started to think that’s better simply because it’s cheaper.
But it’s not better. It really deflates people’s interest and makes the companies come off as distant and arrogant. I’m not asking for weekly updates but it’d be nice if before asking for my pre-order companies actually bothered to tell me what a game was about. And that’s just not something that’s happening a lot lately.

Just add Elle
In Monday’s Inbox Woody said ‘I have no idea who Elle Fanning is and I doubt her being in the new game, whatever it is, will help improve anything.’
In my humble opinion, anything with Elle Fanning in or even associated with is at the very least worthy of interest. If you haven’t seen her in The Great, the second series of which is now being shown on Channel 4, which she also produces, you’ve missed a treat.
Elle Fanning = huzzah!

Do not disturb
It’s crazy to me to think that Silent Hill 2 is 21 years old now. I remember that game very well and the impression it left on me. It was one of the first games I played on my PlayStation 2, which was my reintroduction to the world of video games, after not really playing them during my teenage years.
The game is scary but it’s not just jump scares, more a feeling of just inescapable doom; that you’re always just postponing the inevitable. The atmosphere is thick you can almost feel it around your whole body, like that dream where you can only walk forwards incredibly slowly. How they did that on such ancient technology I don’t know but it seems like such lightning in the bottle I’m worried about them being able to do it again.
Like many, I’ve never been particularly impressed by Bloober Team and if The Medium was meant to be their homage to Silent Hill it was a total failure. Silent Hill is about subtlety and a slow burn, and it absolutely isn’t about combat, if they’re thinking of beefing that up.
I’m not saying that the rumoured remake couldn’t work but it sounds like such a difficult thing to do I’d rather not wait all this time just to be disappointed. It also sounds like something that’s not going to sell. Silent Hill is not Resident Evil. It’s not goofy and fun, it’s disturbing and horrible. I love it but I’m beginning to think I should just be happy with my memories of it and leave it at that.

PS: I was disappointed that PlayStation VR2 isn’t backward compatible with PlayStation VR1. Still interested though.
I hope GTA 6 has proper character customisation for its leads, as I do not want to play as someone who wears a baseball cap backwards.

This week’s Hot Topic
After last weekend’s Inbox about favourite fantasy video games this week’s asks the related question: what’s your favourite sci-fi game?
It can be a licensed game if you want but try to also include a game that started in video games. How big a fan of science fiction are you in general, and how much of a distinction do you make between relatively grounded settings and space fantasy?
Do you feel there are too many or too few sci-fi games at the moment and what kind of games would you like to see more of, including specific genres like space combat simulators and sci-fi horror?
