Paul Hollywood dusted off his handshake for the first time this series on The Great British Bake Off on Tuesday, with the judge dishing out not one but two of the coveted congratulatory hand pumps.

Dawn was the first baker to receive one for her yo-yo design macrons, with fellow judge Prue Leith looking like she was encouraging Paul with a ‘go on’ as he went to shake her hand.

Maxy followed up her success afterwards in the signature challenge too, as her daisy-shaped macrons, inspired by her young daughters, were also lavished with praise.

However, viewers at home appeared to be over the famous handshake, complaining that the judge now whips them up more quickly and easily than he used to.

It is, after all, only week two…

‘The Hollywood Handshake has lost all meaning. Handing them out in week two, old Paul would NEVER have done it,’ complained one viewer on social media.

Another noted: ‘Paul is getting to generous with his handshakes, they used to be a rarity and now he dishes them out all the time.’

‘Two Hollywood handshakes in one round. For macarons. Calm yourself down Paul lad,’ chimed in a third.

One viewer claimed that the iconic move had ‘lost all meaning’, having previously been considered a mark of a particularly impressive bake and handed out sparingly by the judge, as they begged him to ‘give it a rest’.

A Paul Hollywood handshake in week 2?! It’s more devalued than the British Pound these days! #GBBO

‘A Paul Hollywood handshake in week 2?! It’s more devalued than the British Pound these days!’ quipped another.

Biscuit week saw tears and tension in the tent as the 11 remaining contestants tackled a signature challenge of macrons and a technical challenge involving Garibaldi biscuits.

For their showstopper, the bakers were asked to create biscuits masks that could be presented standing upright, which saw Carole in tears as hers snapped with just minutes to go.

Ultimately, following her handshake, Maxy was crowned Star Baker for Biscuit Week having barely put a foot wrong.

The second competitor to leave the tent was Maisam, following Will’s exit during Cake Week, as the youngest baker this series crumbled a little under the pressure of timings.

The Great British Bake Off returns next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4 and is available to watch on All 4.
