It’s been almost a year since Mark Harmon bowed out of NCIS but until the season 20 premiere he’s remained at the front of the opening credits.

Premiering in 2003, the CBS drama focuses on the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and its band of special agents as they investigate crimes across the United States.

At the heart of this team is former sniper turned Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, who was played by lead actor Mark for 19 seasons until he left in 2021.

However, during the season 20 premiere yesterday, for the first time Harmon wasn’t featured as the first cast member.

Instead, actor Sean Murray, who plays senior field agent Timothy McGee and has done since the second season, took his place, dashing any hopes Harmon will return anytime soon.

Executive producer Steven D. Binder explained the change to TV Insider, stating: ‘Mark will not appear in any more episodes…so he remained in the credits because we didn’t kill him.’

However, the producer did not rule out an eventual return for Harmon, adding: ‘Those are things that we have not sorted out quite yet, so the answer is we will wait and see.’

The actor had previously agreed to a limited appearance in season 19 after the show had been threatened with cancellation.

Appearing in just four episodes, it seems Harmon could still keen to return after stressing: ‘I’m not retired… The character is living in Alaska as far as I know.’
