Syed was later arrested and charged with murder, with the prosecution arguing that he had strangled Lee to death after she had dumped him.

Syed, now 41, has always maintained he is innocent.

Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn ordered the release of Adnan Syed.
Phinn placed Syed under home detention and ordered him to be monitored by a GPS tracking device. She gave prosecutors 30 days to decide whether to seek a new trial or dismiss the charges against him.
As Syed walked out of the Baltimore City Circuit Courthouse, he was greeted by a large, cheering crowd.
Syed was originally granted a retrial by a Maryland judge back in 2016, following the popularity of the podcast bringing his case back into the spotlight.

It was secured on the basis that his original lawyer failed to cross-examine an expert witness who claimed she saw Syed in the library at Woodland on the afternoon Lee went missing.
However following an appeal by the state of Maryland, four judges denied him a new trial – saying that the witness would not have affected the outcome of the proceedings.
Adnan’s attorney Justin Brown said in a statement afterwards: ‘We are devastated by the Court of Appeals’ decision but we will not give up on Adnan Syed.’
