New Japan Pro Wrestling star KUSHIDA has been diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease.
The 39-year-old wrestler – who previously worked for WWE on the NXT and 205 Live shows – has been pulled from Friday’s NJPW event in Kumamoto.
In a statement, New Japan said: ‘Thank you for supporting New Japan Pro Wrestling.
‘Following his absence from September 21’s Kumamoto event, KUSHIDA will not be cleared to compete on September 23 in Kumamoto. After being assessed for a suspected skin disease, KUSHIDA has been diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth disease.
‘We apologise to fans who were looking forward to seeing KUSHIDA wrestle and appreciate your understanding.’
Initially, the company had pulled the star from Wednesday’s show referencing a ‘suspected skin disease’, but later announcing the extent of his illness.
According to the NHS, hand, foot and mouth disease ‘usually gets better on its own in 7 to 10 days’, with symptoms including ulcers and a rash.
Originally, KUSHIDA was set for Friday’s show as part of a blockbuster match teaming with Jado, Toru Yano, and Hiroshi Tanahashi against Bullet Club members Gedo, Taiji Ishimori, Doc Gallows, Karl Anderson and Jay White.
A change was announced, although New Japan now list White as a competitor on both sides of the card, so it’s unclear who will actually be replacing KUSHIDA, who is yet to comment himself on the news.
Fans have been quick to offer messages of support at this time, particularly after he only returned to NJPW back in June following his WWE exit two months earlier.
‘Oh no. I hope he gets ample time to recover. His return is only the beginning, we will get plenty of time to see him shine,’ wrote on fan.
‘Wishing him a speedy recovery,’ added a second, while a third tweeted: ‘Oh, dear. Get well soon, Kushida.’
