Mel C has revealed that she used to sleep on a ‘mattress on the floor’ during her Spice Girls fame, despite their hit song Wannabe topping charts.

The Widnes-born star was 1/5 of the Spice Girls, along with Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown (Mel B), Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell.

Formed in 1994, they went on to sell millions of records worldwide, and even bagged their own movie, but fame didn’t come early on.

‘You think, wow they must’ve been plucked and taken into this extraordinary showbiz life,’ Holly Willoughby began, adding: ‘And actually the reality of how you were living when that was number on was entirely different.’

Mel C explained to Holly and Phillip Schofield on This Morning, about living with Mel B during the early days of their fame: ‘We were living in a little house, opposite Geri’s mum, and I was on a mattress on the floor when Wannabe was at number one.

‘Because of course, you become successful but if you’re lucky enough to have the success that brings you money and wealth, it comes a little bit down the line.’

Elsewhere, Mel revealed a wild story about Victoria Beckham’s ‘knickers being chucked out of a cab’.

‘This was all quite new to us,’ she began, recalling the night after the Spice Girls signed their first record deal.

‘We went in this cab and we’d had a few champagnes to celebrate signing this deal, and somebody’s knickers ended up being chucked out of the taxi, which is very Spice Girls.

‘And Victoria I’m sorry for telling that story,’ she laughed, adding: ‘It’s quite a bizarre thing but we were young!’

‘And Victoria’s always beautifully put together but it was like, “Come on, let your hair down.”‘

It wasn’t just Victoria who Mel C called out, as she shared admitted that her band member Geri was a ‘horrible driver’.

‘She spends most of the time chatting to you through the mirror or putting her lippy on,’ Mel C joked, adding: ‘Well back in the day she did anyway.’

Mel C did however praise Geri over her cheekily breaking protocol when they met then-Prince Charles years ago.

In an iconic moment that will forever go down in pop culture and Royal Family infamy, Geri, then Ginger Spice, actually patted Charles on the behind.

But she insists she didn’t pinch his bum, as was reported at the time.

She later told The Times: ‘I didn’t pinch Prince Charles’s bum, as was reported. I patted it.

‘Patting him on the bottom was against royal protocol but we’re all human.

‘It was the premiere of our film, Spice World, in the late 90s There was a lot of nervous energy – young women, happy antics.’

Speaking about them ‘breaking all protocol rules,’ Mel C told Holly and Phil: ‘I think there was definitely a little pat to the derriere, and lots of lipstick on his face.’

She added that being one of the ‘quieter ones’, she, Emma and Victoria must have been ‘dying inside’ and ‘cringing’ at the time, but ‘I’m so gratefyk tgat Melanie and Geri did have the courage to do that and break protocol.’

‘People are people, and we feel very lucky to know Charles a little bit,’ adding that the new King has ‘a chuckle’ with them.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
