Former The Goldbergs star Jeff Garlin revealed he has bipolar disorder hours before his character Murray Goldberg was killed off in the season 10 premiere.

Garlin, 60, swiftly departed the sitcom last year after claims inappropriate ‘verbal and physical conduct’ on set made people uncomfortable, which he downplayed.

Taking to Instagram, the actor shared news of his bipolar, the mental health condition that affects your moods and can swing from one extreme to another.

He wrote: ‘Bipolar is a mother*cker. Sometimes it’s just too much to deal with. I’m doing the best I can.

‘This the first time that I’ve opened up about this. #bipolar.’

The comedian’s admission came shortly before his Goldbergs character was killed off-screen in the show’s latest episode on Wednesday.

Adam (played by Sean Giambrone) shared news of his dad’s death at the beginning of the instalment, titled If You Build It.

‘Just a few months ago, out of nowhere, we lost my dad,’ he said, with the camera focussing in on Murray’s beloved recliner.

‘We will always love you, Dad. Always. And we’ll find a way to continue on together. Because, after all, we’re the Goldbergs.’

Late last month, The Goldbergs showrunner Alex Barnow explained that Murray would be dead and buried.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said: ‘Well, [Garlin is] not going to be on the season, obviously. [Murray] will have passed, and we are sort of starting from a place of multiple months removed from his death.

‘The family has already grieved, unlike Pops [George Segal] and the premiere of season 9 where they’re dealing with it sort of very freshly. This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that.

‘So, we’re starting with optimism about a baby coming and looking forward to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving.

‘But Jeff won’t be in the series this year, and so far the stories have been largely about looking forward rather than looking back.’

Garlin left The Goldbergs in 2021 after an HR investigation into claims he was inappropriate on set.

Responding to the allegations at the time, Garlin told Vanity Fair: ‘There was no… Nothing physical by any stretch of the imagination.

‘And the verbal part was a joke that was completely missed – because I like this guy. I like his wife. I’ve worked with them for years.’

He also responded to allegations he sent a text to a Goldbergs colleague, suggesting they come to the next table-read without wearing a lot of clothes.

The actor said he didn’t remember sending the text, and that he doesn’t make jokes like that because he ‘does not find them funny’.

Garlin also apologised if people were offended by something he had said to them given that he is a stand-up comedian, but vehemently denied that he had ever ‘physically come at anyone’.
