Warning: spoilers ahead for RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 4 episode 1.

The joy of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK is back for season 4, as 12 new queens entered the Werk Room in episode 1 to show the nation and the world what they’re made of.

The competitors were thrown straight into deep end, taking part in a Spice Girls-themed photoshoot from the get-go before delivering two looks for the runway, the first inspired by the BBC’s 100th anniversary and the second a showcase of their signature drag.

In the end, after landing in the bottom two against Dakota Schiffer, Just May became the first queen to be told by head judge RuPaul to sashay away after losing in the lip sync, which was set to Mabel’s Let Them Know.

Beforehand, the 32-year-old from Essex had paid homage to the bronze bust of Queen Victoria in EastEnders for her first look, before taking to the stage in a figure-hugging, fishtail dress embossed with a pattern of her own face.

Speaking of Just May’s efforts, guest judge Dame Joanna Lumley said: ‘She hadn’t achieved glamour in her “Ru Are Ya” look. It was sweet but it wasn’t glamorous.’

After learning she’d become the first queen to be axed from the competition, Just May said that it felt ‘iconic’ to be the first, taking after Geri Halliwell’s exit from the Spice Girls.

Speaking of her experience on the show, Just May said that while it was ‘short and sweet’, she ‘loved every moment of it’.

‘I’ve always been a big fan of the show so to be a part of myself was an incredible experience!’ she said, while also adding that ‘everyone remembers the first eliminated queen’. Quite right!

The performer expressed how much she enjoyed emulating Geri during the photoshoot, which was inspired by the Spice Girls’ performance at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

‘Being on set with RuPaul directing me and getting to live my fashion fantasy was definitely a memorable moment,’ she said.

When asked what advice she would give to anyone with aspirations to become drag queens, Just May recommended for them to ‘pick an obscure pop star from your childhood and emulate everything what they do’.

‘I love being able to express my love of The Spice Girls through my art of drag and I think it’s really important to incorporate something you’re passionate about into what you do, whatever that may be. I hope I made Geri proud!’ she said.

There are now 11 queens left in the running to be named the UK’s Next Drag Superstar.

So from Black Peppa to Cheddar Gorgeous, Danny Beard and Sminty Drop, who do you think has what it takes to go all the way?

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK returns next Thursday at 9pm on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.
