BBC’s Inside Man finally premieres tonight, and while the synopsis doesn’t give too much away we know that the characters ‘cross paths in the most unexpected way.’

The gripping four-parter follows a prisoner on death row in the US, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped inside a cellar.

The official plot reads: ‘In the US, a prisoner on death row is seeking atonement as he faces execution. On a train in England, a journalist is looking for a story.

‘In a quiet little village, a vicar is picking up his son’s maths tutor from the station. All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.’

Doctor Who star David Tennant stars as vicar Harry Watling, while American actor Stanley Tucci plays murderer Jefferson Grieff.

Elsewhere, It’s A Sin star Lydia West plays investigative journalist Beth Davenport

But is the series based on a true story? Here’s everything you need to know.

Is the drama based on a book and is it a true story?

Inside Man creator Steven wrote the script as an original for the BBC, which means the series is not based on a novel.

The drama also isn’t based on a true story as it was created for BBC and a US Netflix audience.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Steven described his inspiration behind a different kind of thriller.

‘I was thinking of what kind of detectives we hadn’t had,’ he said.

‘Pretty much ever since [writer Arthur Conon] Doyle invented Sherlock Holmes, there has been no other kind of detective – they’re all rip-offs.”

But [Grieff’s] particular area of insight is he knows that anyone can do it. He’s not supporting his worldview with the fairy tale that supports your worldview and mine, that there’s goodness and kindness.
