Bob Mortimer has revealed he fell ill and was taken to hospital after filming BBC show Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.

The comedian underwent a triple heart bypass operation after being diagnosed with coronary heart disease seven years ago.

The 63-year-old said at the time he sought medical help as he thought he had a chest infection but learned ‘completely out of the blue’ that his arteries were ‘95% blocked.’

Appearing as a guest on Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast, which is recorded live at the iconic London theatre, Bob gave an update on his health.

Speaking on Monday when asked about his heart problems, Bob said: ‘I am not very well. I am not very healthy at the moment.’

He continued: ‘I did a show last week, a fishing show and there was only two and a half days filming and I did it Tuesday, Wednesday and half of Thursday and I was in hospital on the Saturday.

‘I am sorry I should not have said that should I? It’s a real downer.’

As well as his recent hospitalisation, Bob also said he had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, having first had the condition in his 20s.

According to The Sun, he added: ‘In my mid-20s I got struck down with rheumatoid arthritis. I just woke up and it was like, “bang.”

‘I have been free of it since I have been 34 and it came back 10 days ago. It is really sad for me to know whether it will go. Yes I might be fat but actually, I am on steroids.’

After his health scares, Bob said he had wanted to overhaul his lifestyle because he felt ‘like a brush with mortality.’

He added: ‘I did some things after the operation that I wouldn’t have done before. It felt like a brush with mortality. I realised that you are counting down the years.’
