Angelina Jolie has spoken out amid the ongoing protests in Iran following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, insisting that women need the ‘freedom to live’ in an impassioned plea.

Amini died after being detained by police for allegedly wearing her hijab too loosely, sparking global protests and outrage.

In response, Oscar-winning actress and humanitarian activist Jolie, 47, took to Instagram on Wednesday to share a series of images from the streets of Iran in tribute to the ‘brave’ women of the country.

She wrote to her 13.7 million followers: ‘Respect to the brave, defiant, fearless women of Iran. All those who have survived and resisted for decades, those taking to the streets today, and Mahsa Amini and all young Iranians like her.

‘Women don’t need their morals policed, their minds re-educated, or their bodies controlled. They need freedom to live and breathe without violence or threats.

In the final slide of the actress’ Instagram post she shared text that explained: ‘Protests in Iran are in their 12th consecutive night. They started in response to the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in morality police custody.‘

Since the protests began, riot police have attacked protestors with brutal force, and more than 70 people have reportedly been killed.’

She was referencing the violent unrest that has been exploding across the Iranian capital, Tehran, and the rest of the country.

Women have ripped off, waved and set alight their hijabs in defiance while in other protests sweeping Iran, men and women have been heard chanting: ‘We will fight and take our country back.’

Demonstrations reached London last week as protestors took to the Iranian embassy, where crowds were chanting ‘Death to the Islamic Republic’ as they waved Iran’s former national flag from before 1979.

Tensions grew and protestors increased as the Met deployed more officers to the scene in Knightsbridge.
