The BBC has announced the return of its global competition series Race Across the World, following a two-year break from our screens.

Well, it’s back, finally, and more teams of two will be racing between worldwide destinations without flying or smartphones on a tight cash limit.

The third instalment, which will air on BBC One for the first time, will be the most extreme to date when the five pairs of travellers will have to race across an entire continent – ocean to ocean.

Starting out at the very edge of the Pacific in Vancouver, the teams will travel over 16,000 kilometres, across six time zones, all at ground level to the finish line in North America’s most easterly city, St John’s Newfoundland.

Beginning their journey in Canada the pairs will once again have no mobile phones, no internet access, no credit cards and will only have the cash equivalent of the airfare to their final destination.

In order to win the £20,000 cash prize, the teams will race to get to St John’s Newfoundland first, relying on the kindness of strangers, travel skills and ingenuity.

The broadcaster also revealed that the much-anticipated Celebrity Race Across The World will go into production later this year, with the celeb pairings being announced in the coming months.

The last season of the Bafta-winning second series aired in March 2020, while most of the world was still in lockdown, having been filmed prior to the pandemic and saw the rival teams travel the length of Latin America, from Mexico City to Ushuaia, Argentina, the most southerly city in the world.

Uncle and nephew duo, Emon and Jamiul, eventually beat their rivals Jen and Rob by a nail-biting 20 seconds and donated most of their £20,000 cash prize to charity after being touched by the poverty they witnessed in South America, while on the race.

Series one saw husband and wife Elaine and Tony win £20,000 after racing from Singapore to London.

Race Across The World is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
