We never knew we needed a stage show so much.

Singing, dancing, and dodging bullets – that’s what we could see at an arts space near us soon with Danny Boyle directing a Matrix-themed production.

Released in 1999 and directed by The Wachowskis, The Matrix tells the story of computer hacker Neo (Keanu Reeves) who discovers the life he has come to live is a lie, and an elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.

It won numerous awards at the time of its release and became the fourth highest-grossing film of that year, taking in $463million (£416m) at the box office.

It went on to inspire two feature film sequels released in 2003, Reloaded (which earned $741m [£667m] at the box office) and Revolutions (which earned $427m [£384m]) as well as a fourth film, The Matrix Resurrections, released last year ($157m [£141m]).

Now, The Matrix is hitting the stage, sort of, with director Danny Boyle set to take on a dance adaptation of the blockbuster.

Titled Free Your Mind, the £182 million Warner Bros. Theater Ventures-licensed project is described as a ‘large scale immersive performance’.

It is set to debut in October 2023 at Factory International, a new arts venue in Manchester.

‘Combining the hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest immersive design, Free Your Mind will take audiences on a thrilling journey through The Matrix and into a new realm of possibilities,’ the logline reads.

‘This eye-opening production will stretch across the building’s ultra-flexible spaces, responding to them and harnessing the collective energy of the moment.’

While not revealing too many details about the show, Boyle told The Guardian: ‘You know what it’s like, especially at the moment, you think “What the f**k is going on?” This is a project where we try to address that … through dance, really.

‘That’s not giving too much away but it does reveal some of the ambition of it.’

Organisers behind the show predict it will showcase ‘spectacular visual effects, a cast of professional dancers and hundreds of Manchester participants’ to recreate scenes from the hit film, ‘provoking visions of an alternative future.’

The dance show’s music will be composed by Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante, with Kenrick ‘H2O’ Sandy as the choreographer.
