There was a tense atmosphere in the BBC studios as Ian Hislop and Paul Merton made some risky jokes on The One Show.

They’re famous for making controversial political jokes on Have I Got News For You, but they learned pretty quickly that The One Show isn’t the place for such jibes.

During their interview with Alex Jones an Ronan Kemp on Friday’s show, the presenting duo were quizzed on how they come up with the content for the programme each week.

They started by teasing that they are handed ‘scripts’ three months in advance, before explaining that the hosts usually ‘know what’s gonna come up,’ so they can plan their content around it.

But, Ian had the whole studio on edge when he chimed in with a dig at the PM.

‘Except when something absolutely bizarre happens, like Liz Truss is Prime Minister, then you’re on your own,’ he said.

‘Ooh did you feel that nervousness that went around the room then,’ Paul pointed out, after the whole room fell silent.

Capital FM host Ronan let out an awkward laugh, before telling the pair: ‘We leave the politics to your show!’

‘Sorry, it’s a live show, I’m worried now about saying things,’ Paul added.

Taking to Twitter after the show, viewers actually praised The One Show’s hosts for managing to keep the show on track, despite Ian and Paul trying to descend it into chaos.

‘@AlexJones is working hard to keep @PaulMerton and @Ianhislop on track tonight in @theoneshow. Well done on a hard job Alex. Great show tonight,’ one person wrote.

It isn’t just political figures who are subject to ridicule on HIGNFY, as the panelists are forever ripping into public figures – with Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield being the latest.

The This Morning presenters’ ‘queue jumping’ scandal has been on everyone’s lips over recent weeks, despite ITV bosses denying that they skipped the line to see the Queen’s coffin lying in state.

Of course, the HIGNFY stars couldn’t resist poking fun at the drama, branding it ‘the nation’s biggest scandal’ last week.

Richard Ayoade began: ‘TV’s Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield apparently just appeared in Westminster Hall on Sunday…’

Roisin Conaty joked: ‘Just appeared? Like a haunting?’, before Richard added: ‘Exactly, without having spent the previous 36 hours queuing.’

When asked what the average queuing time was, Ian Hislop joked: ‘It started at about 14 hours, then 15, and in the end it was… six years.’

He added: ’People liked the experience of queuing, they liked being there and then when they thought someone had jumped the queue they got very cross.’
