Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker keeps sending Ncuti Gatwa ‘eight minute monologues’ on WhatsApp.

The outgoing Time Lord – who was the first woman to assume the role in its six decade history – labelled the casting of the 29-year-old actor ’inspired’ and admitted sending him long videos and voice notes via text message.

Thankfully for Ncuti, Jodie has moved on enough to just feel happy for the Sex Education star assuming the role she has played since 2017, so we can safely assume the messages are full of praise of helpful advice

The 40-year-old actress told Empire magazine: ‘Unfortunately for Ncuti, he gave me his number. So he’s getting eight-minute monologues from me on WhatsApp.

‘Luckily, enough time had passed between finishing shooting and finding out about the new Doctor for me to just feel pure excitement about it. It’s inspired casting. He’s gonna smash it.’

Jodie’s last go as The Doctor – an episode titled The Power of the Doctor – will air in October as the final installment in the trilogy of specials, which have been broadcast throughout 2022 with the first landing on New Year’s’ Day, and will feature fan-favourite companion, Bradley Walsh.

Previously, the outgoing showrunner Chris Chibnall – who is being replaced by Russell T Davies, marking his return to BBC sci-fi drama for its 60th year after resurrecting the show in 2005 – hailed the episode as an ‘epic and emotional send-off for the Thirteenth Doctor’.

He said: ‘Jodie’s final feature-length story contains a plethora of treats and surprises for audiences and fans, not least the return of two of the most beloved companions in the show’s history.

‘They’ll be helping the Doctor fight on three fronts, against her deadliest enemies: the Master, Daleks and Cybermen, in one huge story!

‘For the BBC’s centenary, we’ll be celebrating the past, present and future of Doctor Who, in a fittingly thrilling, epic and emotional send-off for the Thirteenth Doctor.’

Rumours surrounding the anniversary celebrations of the show have swirled since David Tennant – who played the Tenth Doctor between 2005 and 2010 – was photographed on the set in Bristol along with Catherine Tate, who played his ex companion Donna, but the rest is being kept under wraps.

Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor is coming to BBC One in October.
