It’s been 15 years since Paul Potts captured the hearts of a nation and won the very first series of Britain’s Got Talent.
The retail worker turned opera singer became an overnight success story back in 2007, launching a career which has taken him around the world performing music for adoring fans.
Reflecting on his experience on the ITV talent show, Paul admitted: ‘There’s a certain sense of achievement but also a little bit melancholy because it’s a moment you’ll never get back.
‘But at the same time, it’s a moment they can never take away.’
The 51-year-old star explained the best part of the way things have gone for him is simply being able to do what he loves.
‘I get to do what I love doing now, which for me is the ultimate definition of what success is – to do what makes you, you,’ he smiled. ‘It doesn’t matter what you do. If you’re doing what you want, then you’re a success.’

As for where the tenor – who will release new double album Musica Non Proibita next week ahead of a 10-date UK tour – be without BGT, he said: ‘I’d probably still be in retail somewhere! I’d probably be still singing in a small box room.’
Of course, over the years he has been stopped plenty of times by adoring fans recognising him from his time on the show – and it’s happened in the most unexpected places.
He said: ‘That happens. I’ve had a bizarre situation in Korea, in the streets of Seoul, being chased down the street by a policeman thinking, “What have I done?” He wanted my photograph! It happened twice in one day.’
It’s been a wild 15 years for Paul, whose life was even turned into a Hollywood movie with James Corden playing the lead role in One Chance, and he joked the timing of the film was a bit strange.
”I keep checking my pulse because they normally wait till you’re dead,’ he teased.
Britain’s Got Talent airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
