Strictly Come Dancing star Fleur East has joked that partner Vito Coppola’s hygiene problems are persisting – and might have even got a tad worse.

The former X Factor contestant and Italian dancer had the daunting task of closing the first live episode of the juggernaut BBC series with the Cha-Cha-Cha.

Impressing judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and head judge Shirley Ballas, the singer and Vito came in third place, scoring 29 out of a possible 40 points.

Fleur had previously joked on an episode of Good Morning Britain about getting up close and personal with Vito, telling hosts Susanna Reid and Ben Shephard she had bought him deodorant and detergent for his birthday.

Ahead of the second live show, where the pair will grace the ballroom floor with the Viennese Waltz, Fleur and the 30-year-old spoke to Metro.co.uk, where the subject of Vito’s hygiene was brought up.

When asked about the hilarious bday gifts, Fleur said: ‘I got him washing detergent, fabric conditioner and a Jo Malone candle for his flat. All nice-smelling things. I’m hoping that he’ll start to come to rehearsals maybe smelling a little bit nice.

Vito joked: ‘I guess the next present will be a deodorant? Anything regarding my smell.’

But it seems like Vito still hasn’t quite got the hint, with Fleur revealing she struggled during a routine owing to his pongy breath.

Fleur quipped: ‘The other day he had cheese and onion crisps. We’re doing the Viennese Waltz, right, and there are parts where we have to get really close and he’s eaten cheese and onion crisps and breathing in my face.’

Laughing, Vito replied: ‘It actually works as it helps you stay in frame and shape as in the dance you have to really lean your head back, but Fleur was always coming too close.

‘After eating the cheese and onion crisps, her frame and position were perfect. I found the solution. Maybe I should eat them more?’

Fleur also dismissed a false headline that claimed she had been ‘angry’ about the judges’ comments after the first live performance.

She added: ‘I wasn’t surprised at all by the feedback as I’ve never trained as a dancer. I don’t know how to do the pointed toes or spin or any of that stuff.

‘How I dance is just raw, it’s just whatever I feel. And, as a singer, if I’ve ever had to learn moves for a music video or performance if there’s a move I can’t do the choreographer would just change it, so I’ve never had to learn any technique.

‘I was really grateful for the feedback; it was really good.’

Strictly Come Dancing air tonight on BBC One and iPlayer at 6.30pm
