Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story star Evan Peters has said portraying the serial killer was ‘one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my life’.
Dahmer was convicted of brutally killing and dismembering 17 victims, all male, between the years 1978 and 1991. Many of his later murders involved necrophilia, cannibalism, and the permanent preservation of body parts.
Peter plays the killer in Ryan Murphy’s recently released true crime Netflix series, which has left many viewers feeling sick, and admits he was initially fearful of taking on the role.
‘Honestly, I was very scared about all the things that he did, and diving into that and trying to commit to that was absolutely going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my life because I wanted it to be very authentic,’ he said.
‘But in order to do that, I was gonna have to go to really dark places and stay there for an extended period of time.’
In an interview with Netflix, he continued: ‘I have to say that the crew was instrumental in keeping me on the guard rails, I cannot thank them enough and I could not have done any of this role with them.’

The chilling Netflix series is told through the lives of the victims who were impacted by the systemic racism and institutional failures of the police that allowed Dahmer to continue his killing spree before eventually being imprisoned in 1992.
Once in prison, Dahmer died at the age of 34 after being beaten to death by another inmate.

‘It was a challenge to try to have this person who was seemingly so normal but underneath all of it, had this entire world that he was keeping secret from everybody,’ Evans added.

To prepare for the role, Evans revealed he listened to audio of Dahmer as well as reading biographies and police reports.
‘It was so jaw-dropping that it all really happened that it felt important to be respectful to the victims, to the victims’ families, to try and tell the story as authentically as we could.’
