Marilyn Monroe fans furious at ‘disgusting’ John F Kennedy scene in new film Blonde-Rachael O'Connor-Entertainment – Metro

Fans of Marilyn Monroe have been left sickened by a scene in new film Blonde which features former US President John F Kennedy.
The Netflix film, from director Andrew Dominik, was released last week and is causing some controversy among fans of the late actress.
While Blonde looks like a biopic, the film has actually been adapted from Joyce Carol Oate’s book of the same name: released in 2001, and a work of fiction.
The NC-17 film contains some shocking scenes, some of which are completely made up just to make a better story – it is a work of fiction, after all.
However the nature of the film and the confusion surrounding whether it is a biopic or not has proved one scene in particular offensive to fans.
Marilyn Monroe had been rumoured to have had an affair with the late US President JFK, but while the rumours were never substantiated, the film shows the pair together in a brutal way.

In the film, a drugged Marilyn (Ana de Armas) is brought to ‘the president,’ who is on the phone denying claims of sexual assault.
As he speaks on the phone he forces Marilyn into performing a sex act on him.
The scene has caused widespread outrage – and confusion – as some argue it is a defamation of their characters, and others appear to believe it really happened.
One person described the scene as ‘insane,’ while one fan of the movie incorrectly said it ‘probably’ happened ‘as portrayed’ in the film.
‘Why would the film #Blonde fabricate a graphic rape of MarilynMonroe by #JFK? Disgusting exploitation. Hard pass,’ one disgusted person wrote.

Another said she had seen the film and the scene with Kennedy was ‘horribly engrained in my mind.’
One fan praised the film, but added that they found that particular moment totally disgusting and should’ve never made the cut.’
‘Blonde was not good,’ another said, ‘and that JFK scene was disgusting and unnecessary.’
Another slammed it as ‘the most degrading depiction of Marilyn Monroe,’ while one said it was ‘absolutely appalling. It’s meant to be a biopic, not historical fiction!’

The new release tracks back to the early years of Norma Jeane and the abuse she suffered at the hands of her alcoholic, mentally ill mother.
It then depicts her rocketing to fame – where she continues to be a victim.
Director Dominik himself doesn’t appear to be the biggest fan of the woman who his film is about, recently labelling her song Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend as ‘romanticised whoredom.’

In an interview with Sight and Sound magazine, the director reportedly said that Marilyn is ‘this huge cultural thing,’ but asked: ‘Does anyone watch Marilyn Monroe movies?’
He added that he was not aiming for historical accuracy in the film, and said Blonde was intended to leave viewers feeling unsettled.
He said: ‘Blonde is supposed to leave you shaking. Like an orphaned rhesus monkey in the snow. It’s a howl of pain or rage.’

Despite controversy from the public, Blonde receive a 14-minute standing ovation at the Venice film festival, with some tipping Ana to be honoured with an Oscar nomination for her role.
Blonde is on Netflix now.
