Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki sent fans of the Big Bang Theory into a spin when they confirmed that they had secretly been dating while filming the sitcom.
The pair, who starred as Penny and Leonard Hofstadter respectively, first met on set in 2007 and became firm pals, before sparking a romance which spanned two years until they split in 2009.
Speaking in the pages of a new book detailing the hugely successful comedy, the pair spoke candidly about their real-life romance and the scenes which actually led to them getting together in real life.
In an excerpt of The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story, obtained by Vanity Fair, Kaley explained that she had a ‘very big crush’ on her colleague and was ‘so not even hiding it’, claiming that he had ‘such swagger’ on set.
Despite dating others at the time, things took a turn while filming season one episode, The Middle Earth Paradigm, in which they shared their first on screen kiss after a Halloween party.
Reflecting on Penny’s cat costume for the instalment, Kaley admitted: ‘I knew I looked real cute in that outfit, so I was feeling really good about myself. And I knew he thought I looked cute because he commented on how cute I looked in that outfit earlier. But I was definitely nervous before that kiss.
‘All the scenes up until we actually got together in real life, it was obvious there was always something there. There was chemistry and we were crushing on each other. That was the whole first season until we actually got together for real.’
Shooting a dream sequence for The Nerdvana Annihilation only cemented her passion, with Johnny revealing that he also ‘felt something’ at that moment, describing it as a ‘turning point’.
They didn’t act on their feelings until a while later, when they were both single and ended up at a restaurant together after rehearsal one day.
‘I knew that was going to be trouble – getting a glass of wine with him. I knew. And we kissed at the bar! It’s so dark in there that you almost feel like you can do anything, but then it was like, “Uh‑oh, I think this is really going to be bad”,’ Kaley continued. ‘We started kissing in the bar area, and then we were kissing in the parking lot.’

They jumped right into a relationship but took their time before informing their castmates, with Jim Parsons – who played Sheldon Cooper – the first person they told.
The Flight Attendant actress insisted that they never made a big show of their relationship on set, explaining: ‘We never even had [sex] in our dressing rooms. Absolutely f**king not. Not a chance in hell. I wouldn’t do that. I’m not in the mile-high club. None of that…’
However, they decided to go their separate ways in 2009, bringing their two-year romance to an end.

They decided that they were better off remaining friends, and co-stars, but refrained from sharing the news with their colleagues until later.
‘We’re from very different worlds, but we also seem to melt into each other’s worlds in certain ways. It was a lot of fun to teach one another different things, but then when I came to wanting different things, that made things more complicated,’ Johnny concluded. ‘Kaley being very, very open about her life. I was very uncomfortable with being public about it, and I think that hurt Kaley’s feelings a little bit, and I can understand that.

‘It certainly wasn’t because I was embarrassed of her or our relationship, but I wanted to be protective of the audience’s acceptance of Penny and Leonard, and without distraction from the tabloids. I’m private in general.’
Kaley added that, although they ‘adored’ each other, they ‘ran out of things to talk about’ eventually, as they were together at work all day, and then would spend the evening together after their time on set ended.

The split didn’t hinder their working relationship or friendship at all, and they have remained close ever since – with Johnny among those invited to Kaley’s wedding to Karl Cook in 2018.
They have also continued to support each other on social media, raving about their separate projects and sharing sweet throwback photos from filming.
