‘I was pretty stunned’: Katie Couric offers health update after breast cancer diagnosis-Rishma Dosani-Entertainment – Metro

Katie Couric has offered a health update after revealing her cancer diagnosis last week.

The former Today show presenter shared the news of her condition on Instagram at the end of the month, explaining that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.

The 65-year-old completed radiation treatment just days ago, and spoke out over her condition publicly in a bid to urge others to get checked out.

Chatting to Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie during an appearance on the Today show, she insisted that she is doing great.

‘I’m feeling great,’ she told the hosts. ‘I’m feeling just fine. I finished radiation last week. They said it makes you tired, I was actually not too tired from it.

‘I just feel super lucky that it was diagnosed when it was, that I went – even though I was late – that I went when I did.’

Katie has been a firm supporter of preventative testing in the past, as she has a history of cancer in her family, but missed her latest mammogram.

When she eventually made the appointment, her doctor noticed something on her breast, and ordered a biopsy to determine her findings.

The TV star recalled feeling stunned when she was informed of her diagnosis, which she said was ‘stage 1A’ cancer.

‘She said, “I think there’s something we really need to biopsy and I want to do it today”,’ Katie continued. ‘So I thought, “Oh my, God, you must be kidding me”.

‘And then when I found out the next day, I was pretty stunned, and I think those words “it’s cancerous” or “you have cancer” do stop you in their tracks, but she told me it was treatable. We needed to have a plan.

‘I went from feeling shocked to not that shocked, given my family’s history, to relieved.’

Despite this relief, Katie said that she was ‘nervous’ about sharing the news of her diagnosis with her two daughters, Ellie and Caroline, as they have faced huge losses in the past.

‘I was nervous about it. I waited a few days so I could process it and really understand what we were dealing with,’ she added.

‘I told them, but I was very reassuring. But I saw on their faces… It’s just hard to deliver that news, no matter how you do it. But I assured them that I was going to be fine. And Carrie came with me when I got my lumpectomy.

‘They’ve been incredibly supportive. Of course I was worried about that.

‘[I’m] just so grateful that they caught it early enough so it could be treated.’

Katie went under the knife on July 14 and later began radiation treatment on September 7, undergoing her final session last week.

Confirming her illness in a lengthy essay on her website, she revealed her hopes that this could be a ‘teachable moment’ for her fans, and that her experience could potentially save someone’s life.

‘Please get your annual mammogram,’ she said. ‘I was six months late this time. I shudder to think what might have happened if I had put it off longer.’
