A joke tweet from comedian Lena Dunham about Pride didn’t exactly go down well, with the star receiving backlash online.
The Girls creator, 36, is no stranger to controversy, with her film Sharp Stick being slated by critics and the public upon its release in January this year, one scathing review calling it a ‘cinematic javelin to the head.’
And this week the writer and actress stirred up more frustration as she joked about her wanting her coffin to be driven through a Pride parade when she dies.
Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Lena wrote: ‘When I go, I want my casket to be driven through the NYC pride parade with a plaque that reads “she wasn’t for everyone, but she *was* for us”- who can arrange?’
Lena was instantly hit with exasperated responses from people slamming her tweet as ‘desperate’ and ‘attention seeking,’ with some questioning why she thought herself to be ‘an LGBT icon.’
The star is heterosexual and married musician boyfriend Luis Felber last year, and in a speech once declared she was ‘disappointed’ she wasn’t gay.

One person didn’t pull any punches as they wrote under her joke: ‘She died as she lived: in a ploy for attention that was as puzzling as it was desperate.’
‘It’s called gay pride not straight shame,’ another hit out,’ while another asked: ‘Did you lose a bet where they made you tweet this?’
One user joked they were going to ‘start living my life with whatever amount of confidence lena dunham has that make her think she’s an lgtbq+ icon.’
And another wrote: ‘Ahh a controversial Lena Dunham tweet. It’s just like the before times.’

Lena is best-known for creating the popular series Girls, which helped launch the careers of the likes of Adam Driver of Star Wars fame.
The critically acclaimed comedy-drama aired between 2012 and 2017 and followed four women – including one played by Lena – in their 20s living in New York City.
Earlier this year the creator was pressed on whether she would ever consider a reboot of the series, however she quickly ruled it out – for now at least.
‘We all recognise it’s not time yet,’ she said. ‘I want it to be at a moment when the characters’ lives have really changed.’

And, referring to Adam’s Star Wars character, she added: ‘Right now, everyone would just be wanting to see Kylo Ren.’
Following his appearance in Girls, Adam gained wider recognition for playing the sci-fi villain, and later clinched two Oscar nominations for films BlacKkKlansman and Marriage Story.
