House of The Dragon’s Olivia Cooke has admitted she wasn’t actually sure she wanted the part of Alicent Hightower when auditioning for the part.

Cooke, 28, has carved out an ideal career as an actor with an impressive CV – starring in Steven Spielberg’s Ready, Steady, Player, Riz Ahmed’s Sound of Metal and breaking out in Me, Earl and the Dying Girl – while managing to live with relative anonymity.

After having a ‘complete breakdown’ in her early 20s, Cooke – who sizzled in a dazzling photoshoot for Rhianna’s Savage X Fenty collection this week – said she found being forced to stop a ‘tonic’ so when the chance to star in a prequel of the biggest television show ever made arrived, actually she had doubts.

‘When I was auditioning, I was definitely like, “I don’t know if this is what I want for my life.” But then I got to see the first two scripts, and it was good,’ she explained to the Guardian.

Three months after auditioning, she was told she landed the part. Her immediate reaction, however, was: ‘It felt amazing. But then also, obviously – “oh my God. Is my life about to change in a really scary way?” And, “What have I done?”

Cooke took over as Alicent Hightower in episode six of House of The Dragon, replacing Emily Carey who received huge praise for her performance as the wife of King Viserys in her earlier years.

Cooke and Emma D’Arcy, who takes over from Milly Alcock as Rhaenyra Targaryen, however were an immediate hit with fans, coming as somewhat of a relief when their predecessors were hailed for carrying the show.

The latest episode was hailed as the best yet by fans as it diverted away from the books of George RR Martin, in a twist that was praised for being a ’genius move’.

The next instalment will see another big time jump as we race through Martin’s story, with Alicent and Rhanyra’s children more grown up.

Viserys is on his last legs with his aide Otto Hightower addressing his people from the Iron Throne.

House of The Dragon is available to stream on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
