Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has highlighted a ‘weird’ similarity between Liz Truss and the prime minister in Years and Years.
National treasure Emma Thompson played fictional UK leader Vivienne Rook in the dystopian drama, which featured an eerily foreshadowing storyline about a ‘monkey flu’ pandemic.
Rook, described as ‘an entertainer, a rebel, a trickster and a terror,’ helmed a far-right party in the show set in Britain from 2019 to 2034, depicting the aftermath of Brexit and a second term of Donald Trump.
The It’s a Sin creator took to Instagram to post a picture of Vivienne alongside Truss, who came into power after Boris Johnson resigned following a slew of scandals, on Wednesday.
In the post, Vivienne is seen wearing a long-sleeved red shift dress with a distinctive collar, while her light blonde hair has been coiffed into a bob.
Meanwhile, Truss is sporting a very similar styled outfit and haircut in a picture taken at the Tory party conference with the slogan ‘Get Britain Moving.’
Russell captioned the post: ‘This is getting weird.’
Fans including celebrities like Jason Manford were quick to react, with the comedian saying: ‘That is really odd.’
One of Russell’s followers penned: ‘It just gets more and more spooky. You are Doris Stokes! 🔮 xx.’

Another wrote: ‘Quick Russell, write something where everything turns out OK.’
‘Are you an actual time traveller Russell is this that what you’re telling us?’ an Instagram account remarked.
It’s not the first time the similarities between Vivienne and Truss have been remarked upon, with former Newsnight host Emily Maitlis previously pointing out their mutual resemblance.

Posting on Twitter in August, she said: ‘Just realised that, once again, Russel T Davies has beaten us to it [sic]’. Her words captioned a picture of Emma Thompson’s character, Vivienne Rook.
Much like the snap posted by Russell, both Vivienne and Truss opt for a red blazer and short blonde hair to complete their respective looks and both of them are looking out beyond the camera that’s focused on them, off into the middle distance.
