Dr Alex George has been met with support from friends and fans after revealing he has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The former Love Island star, 31, shared his diagnosis this week saying he still needed time to ‘reflect’ on the news.

Posting a statement to his personal page, he said that he suspected from his teenage years that he was ‘not the same as a lot of the others around [him]’.

‘I struggled when others did not, and thrived where others found challenge. I have tried to hide and also conform for most of my life. Why? My fear has always been that I don’t want to be labelled and judged,’ he continued.

‘Why would I want to be known as having a “disorder”‘.

He said that the Stompcast conversation with Toddla T, who also received an ADHD diagnosis as an adult, gave him the ‘strength to stop burying [his] head’ and seek answers.

The star revealed that he has been undergoing, and has received a diagnosis, for ADHD over the past few months.

He additionally said it had been a ‘weird few weeks’ after receiving the news, adding: ‘I’m not exactly sure why, I’m the same Alex and I shouldn’t feel any different.

‘I think some of the reflection and even sadness comes from a realisation that I’m 31, and only now beginning to understand why I am as I am.

‘How many other young Alex’s are out there, who are asking themselves “What’s wrong with me? Why am I different?” or even worse being punished for being them’.

Thousands of people have messaged Alex with their support following his post.

Commenting on the statement, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors founder Alex Holmes wrote: ‘Still the same Alex I’m proud to call my friend. Thanks for sharing your diagnosis. Sure will inspire others to consider.’

Toddla T also shared words of encouragement, saying ‘welcome broski!!’

Author and anxiety specialist Joshua Fletcher shared his experience with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in the comments section.

‘Hey my man I had to come to terms with an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder diagnosis and it was freeing,’ he said.

‘It explained so much and helped me to conceptualise a lot of my worries.’

Cosmetic dentist Dr Rhona Eskander called Alex amazing and thanked him for sharing his news.

ADHD is a condition that affects people’s behaviour, and, according to the NHS website, people with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating, and may act on impulse.

Most cases are diagnosed when children are three to seven years old, though sometimes this is not the case and ADHD is diagnosed in adulthood.

Symptoms of ADHD are split into two categories – inattentiveness, and hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Many people diagnosed with the disorder have symptoms that fall into both of these categories, but that is not always the case.

Common symptoms of ADHD in adults include an inability to focus, poor organisational skills, forgetfulness, restlessness, an inability to deal with stress, and impatience.

The cause of ADHD is unknown, though it is thought to run in families.
