I’m a fashion expert – what neckline to wear according to your face shape – and why crew necks are a big no-no for some
WE’RE used to being told how to dress to flatter our body shape, but to really look your best it pays to think about how to dress for your face.
“Your face is the part of you that’s always on show,” says fashion expert Jenn Walderdorff, author of upcoming book, Look At The Labels.

“Your neckline, your necklace and earrings can all help you balance out your face shape and accentuate your best features – it sets up your whole face.”
Celebrity stylist and royal fashion expert Miranda Holder agrees that although your face shape may not necessarily match your body type, it also “comes into play”.

FACE SHAPE: You are wider on the forehead and your face tapers down to a narrower chin.

BEST NECKLINE: Sweetheart.
Jenn says: “You could go for a sweetheart collar which is slightly scalloped at the bust to create the illusion of a heart shape on your upper torso to soften it up.”
WEAR WITH: “If you are more voluptuous on top, try a skater or A line dress,” says Jenn.

WEAR WITH: “Avoid dresses that are boxy and go for shapely styles like the wiggle dress which is a figure-fitting style where the bottom hem is narrower than the hips,” Jenn says.

Sarah Jessica Parker: Oblong
FACE SHAPE: Your face is noticeably longer than it is wide with a rounded chin.
BEST NECKLINE: Off the shoulder.

“Avoid V-necks,” says Miranda, “and opt instead for an off-the-shoulder neckline for an evening look which draws lines horizontally across the body.”
WEAR WITH: Miranda says: “Look for fabrics that go horizontally across your body.
“You might also want to try a large print or break up your outfit with horizontal colour blocks.”
Princess of Wales: Oval
FACE SHAPE: Your face is slightly longer than it is wide, and you have a rounder chin and jawline.
BEST NECKLINE: High. “People with oval faces have plenty of choice,” says Jenn.

“They can opt for high necklines, like a polo neck, which will slightly shorten their faces and is great for cooler months.”
WEAR WITH: “If you’re an oval shape, opt for shapely clothing like high-waisted detailing or trousers,” Jenn says. “It will accentuate your middle.”
Chrissy Teigen: Round
FACE SHAPE: Length and width of your face are the same with a softer, rounded jawline.
BEST NECKLINE: Low. “Choose a lower neckline which will create length, like a V-neck or scoop,” says Jenn.
