Strictly Come Dancing star Tony Adams has confessed the stress of the BBC’s juggernaut show has left him an ’emotional wreck.’

The footballing legend is paired with professional dancer Katya Jones in the long-running series, vying to impress judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke.

The former England captain kicked off the first live show with a performance of the Tango, which paid homage to his career at Arsenal as he descended to the ballroom floor from a gold cannon.

Next up Tony and Katya danced the Charleston, although they landed joint bottom of the leaderboard with a score of 22 out of 40 from the judges.

Appearing on Tuesday’s instalment of It Takes Two, the 55-year-old reflected on his time on the dancing competition show and the gruelling rehearsals.

Referring to receiving scores on the lower end of the scale, host Janette Manrara asked him: ‘How tough was it for you to dust yourself off?

She continued: ‘Tell me how was it because you had a tough week one but you pulled yourself up. How was the training?’

Tony responded: ‘I’ve been an emotional wreck actually for about a month now, to be honest. I’m crying at Legally Blonde and stuff.’

He continued: ‘We’ve got no safety net here, you know? I’m doing something completely out of my comfort zone and I’m just giving it a go.

‘But I don’t want to be laughed at; we’re not the comedy act here. We want to keep trying.

‘[Katya] breaks me every Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday [in rehearsals] and you have to go through the pain and and get some kind of footwork and get better, so it’s nice to be recognised.’

Tony previously told Metro.co.uk how ‘emotional’ he’d become from the outpouring of support he’s received from viewers across the UK, becoming ‘teary’ as he emphasised how thankful he was.

He also revealed a story he’d heard about a young boy who decided to recreate the 55-year-old’s viral Granada training dance, which Katya made sure to include in their first routine last week.

For Movie Week on Saturday, Tony and Katya will dance the Samba to You Sexy Thing from The Full Monty

It Takes Two continues tomorrow at 6.30pm on BBC Two and iPlayer.
