Celebrations are in full swing in Liverpool following the news that the city is to host Eurovision 2023, beating Glasgow at the final hurdle.

However, eagle-eyed viewers who were watching the live TV announcement actually spotted which city had been chosen by the BBC moments before it was confirmed by Graham Norton.

On Friday’s The One Show, the moment came for Eurovision commentator Graham to reveal whether Liverpool or Glasgow had come out on top as he stood behind a plinth.

The TV host ripped open his envelope… but as he brought out the card inside with the selected city, he accidentally displayed it clearly for the camera to see.

The card read: ‘Eurovision Song Contest. United Kingdom. Liverpool 2023,’ as Graham stared down the lens before making the announcement official.

Several people tuning into the broadcast pointed out the gaffe, with one tweeting: ‘Incredible scenes during the Eurovision announcement as Graham Norton builds some tension before the big reveal… holding a card saying “Liverpool 2023”.’

‘Literally right there in front of us,’ someone else wrote, while another person commented: ‘Not Graham Norton taking time in announcing the host city when we could see it on the card.’

Following the announcement, Rylan Clark and Scott Mills were among the celebrities congratulating Liverpool on being bestowed with the honour of hosting.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she was ‘gutted for Glasgow’, while also offering her congratulations to Liverpool, which is where The Beatles was founded.

Kalush Orchestra, who won Eurovision 2022 for Ukraine, expressed their delight over the chosen host city.

‘We are very pleased that next year’s Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Liverpool. Though we haven’t had the privilege of visiting yet, the musical heritage of the city is known all over the world,’ they said in a statement.

‘Playing in the same place that The Beatles started out will be a moment we’ll never forget!

‘Although we are sad that next year’s competition cannot take place in our homeland, we know that the people of Liverpool will be warm hosts and the organisers will be able to add a real Ukrainian flavour to Eurovision 2023 in this city.’

The UK was chosen to host Eurovision 2023 after it was determined that the competition could not be held in Ukraine due to the ongoing war with Russia.

Given the UK’s Sam Ryder came in second behind Kalush Orchestra, the UK is to host the spectacle while ensuring that Ukrainian culture is celebrated.
