WWE superstar Liv Morgan insists she was never meant to be SmackDown Women’s Champion until there was a groundswell of fan support her bosses couldn’t ignore.
The 28-year-old star is hoping to defeat Ronda Rousey at Extreme Rules on Saturday night and return to the UK later this month with the gold around her waist, even if she still feels like some people would prefer someone else in her spot.
After spotting the event’s official poster with Ronda front and centre, she exclusively told Metro.co.uk: ‘It feels very fitting. I believe that if you look at my life on paper, I was never supposed to be in WWE, let alone be their women’s champion.
‘But I am. I don’t think that’s by their design, I think that’s by the fans’. I think they helped make me so undeniable that the company had to kind of listen to that.
‘Maybe I was never their choice but the fans made me their choice, in which case [they] made me champion. So throw Ronda on the poster – she’s not the champion but cool, OK, keep your poster.’
The joys of travelling the world and coming over to the UK isn’t lost on Liv, who never expected to leave her home state of New Jersey.

‘I grew up thinking I was never gonna leave New Jersey. The fact that I’m travelling overseas and I’m getting to visit all these incredible places and spend time in the UK at these groundbreaking, history-making events,’ she smiled.
‘I just feel lucky. I just feel lucky and blessed that I am able to get on a plane and travel somewhere.’
Asked if the lifelong WWE fan could have ever dreamed that wrestling would have been her ticket to see the world, Liv beamed again and admitted she ‘had no idea’ where life would take her.
‘No! I mean, I always hoped,’ she candidly said. ‘That was always the goal, but I had no idea. I came into this business with no connections, no famous name, I wasn’t a generational superstar.’
Holding the SmackDown Women’s Title close to her chest throughout the interview, Liv is still buzzing from her win over Ronda Rousey at Clash At The Castle last month, and she hopes to be back in the UK still at the top of her game.
‘I had no idea where this journey would take me, but I had only hoped for the best – and now I have the very best,’ she said, holding up the title belt. ‘Still got the prize!’
She loves being over in the UK – including some of the aspects locals might take for granted, and she is excited to be back when SmackDown comes to Glasgow for a live event in a few weeks.
It was awesome. I got to explore, I got to walk around, I got to see my face and my colleagues’ faces all over the street. I met a lot of birds, I heard about the strawberry stems – they blew my mind,’ she laughed.
‘I got to wrestle in front of, like, [62,000] people and retain my championship. It was a win, win for me, honestly. I had an incredible time, I can’t wait to go back.’
WWE Extreme Rules airs on Saturday night (October 8) at 1am on the WWE Network. WWE returns to the UK at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro on October 30.
