From the creator of The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, Mike Flanagan has brought us The Midnight Club – a spooky new series following a group of terminally ill teens as they battle with death and existence.
When Ilonka (Iman Benson) arrives at Brightcliffe, having swapped her dreams of cancer for survival, she’s on a mission for a miracle, and thinks she knows where to find it.
Along the way, she’s welcomed into The Midnight Club by the other teens living in the hospice, where they not only try to scare each other with gruesome horror stories as a way of coping with their own deaths, but they also promise to try and communicate with each other after death.
As they spot ghostly sightings and eery apparitions, and battle their own existence, each night the eight members of the Midnight Club come together to share their stories, while on the hunt for signs of the supernatural.
After taking part in a creepy ritual when Anya (Ruth Codd) is lying on her deathbed, Ilonka thinks she’s fought cancer, and is somehow cured.

But, while someone has their diagnosis revoked, it’s not Ilonka, no matter how desperate she is to be.
So desperate in fact, that she turns to Shasta (Samantha Sloyan) for more help, but doesn’t quite realise what she’s giving up.
It turns out that Shasta wasn’t helping Ilonka get better, but wanted to use The Paragon Playbook to ask for a miracle for herself.
After Dr Stanton (Heather Langenkamp) catches what’s going on and has Shasta arrested, Ilonka manages to come to terms with everything that’s going on, and as her and Kevin finally admit their feelings for each other, she chooses to stay.

Meanwhile, the other characters seem to get some form of closure too – Anya’s friend (Ruth Codd) comes to claim her things as he makes peace with her death, Spencer’s (William Chris Sumpter) parents come to visit and accept him for who he is, while Cheri (Adia) acknowledges who her real family are.
As everyone seems to have found temporary happiness in the house, Dr Stanton returns to her office and on the way, viewers see a picture frame of the builders of the house, Stanley and Vera Freelan, who are the old man and woman that Ilonka and Kevin have been seeing around the house.

Finally, Dr Stanton returns to her office and takes off her wig, revealing herself to actually be bald, with a tiny Hourglass symbol on the back of her neck.
But what could Ilonka’s symbol tattooed on Dr Stanton mean? Is this a hint for season two?
Flanagan previously shared with Inverse about a potential season two: ‘It is certainly designed that way. We also didn’t answer some of the bigger questions this season. Those answers exist, but were meant to be for the next season.’
The Midnight Club is available to watch on Netflix.
