The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power entered the final stage of its first season with its latest episode – not only that, but it finally answered one of the show’s biggest mysteries.
The unknown whereabouts of Galadriel’s (Morfydd Clark) husband, Celeborn, have been a source of many fan theories during the first few episodes – with some expectant viewers hoping he would turn up.
But the chances of that happening now appear to be pretty slim, with the latest episode, titled The Eye, apparently confirming that Celeborn was killed before the events of the series.
Galadriel is talking to Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) after last week’s battle when she mentions that she lost not only her brother, Finrod (Will Fletcher), in the wars against Morgoth and Sauron, but her husband as well.
Given that Celeborn turns up in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, which takes place thousands of years after The Rings of Power, fans have been left feeling betrayed by the decision to kill him off.

Naturally, Reddit has exploded, with one fan angrily declaring: ‘Celeborn is actually dead in the show. Nice one Amazon! I thought the Tolkien estate was monitoring this so the changes [wouldn’t] break the lore!’
Another fan responded by calling The Rings of Power a ‘travesty’, while a third viewer said: ‘Is this so that Galadriel can make out with Sauron without technically being unfaithful?’

However, the fact that Celeborn makes a very prominent appearance in the most popular adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s works has resulted in some fans and critics being convinced that this is a red herring.
According to one dedicated viewer: ‘Celeborn is alive 100% as Amazon is contract-bound to not change any character’s death.’
Other viewers noticed that Adar (Joseph Mawle) claimed in episode six that he killed Sauron in the past – this is something that we know isn’t true, considering Sauron will appear in his ‘fair form’ this season.

But even the possibility of Celeborn’s return, which is most likely to happen in season 2, has only received a mixed response, with some fans arguing that Celeborn is only being conveniently ‘kept out of the way’.
In the latest episode, we were shown the origins of Mordor: Mount Doom erupted, destroying The Southlands in the process.
