The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power fans have been left puzzled over the identities of three cloaked witches, with many speculating they could be liked to Sauron.

The Dweller (Bridie Sisson), The Ascetic (Kali Kopae) and The Nomad (Edith Poor) first appeared in episode five of the JRR Tolkien adaptation, which is set in the Second Age.

Wearing long white gowns and ornate silver armour, the trio cropped up at the site of the meteor crash, where The Stranger (Daniel Weyman) fell from the sky in a ball of fire.

Using a map of constellations, the mysterious group has been hot on the tails of The Stranger ever since, who has been trailing a community of harfoots as they travel to a new camp.

After Sadac Burrows (Sir Lennry Henry) encourages The Stranger to part ways with the hobbits, curious Elanor Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh) ends up stumbling into The Dweller, The Ascetic and The Nomad.

Trembling with fear, Elanor’s parents threaten the witches before they use their magic powers to set alight the harfoots’ caravans.

Elanor recognises that, like The Stranger, they can channel the energy of fireflies to wreak havoc and point them in his direction, later informing the community she is going to find him too.

Speculation has mounted the three witches could be members of a cult group called The Mystics, and will join together to create Sauron.

A Reddit user said: ‘What I suggest is that they each represent, mystically, one of the three parts of Sauron that will be joined into a whole.

‘The Dweller – the main part, the one who “dwells” in Eregion. Has been here all this time: Annatar

‘The Nomad – with her helmet, wandering: Halbrand.

‘The Ascetic – monks, hermits, prophets are often described as “ascetics”: The Stranger.’

However, some are theorising that the trio could be linked to the Blue Wizards in Tolkien’s texts that started the cult of magic.

The author wrote: ‘Their task was to circumvent Sauron: to bring help to the few tribes of Men that had rebelled from Melkor-worship, to stir up rebellion… and after his first fall to search out his hiding and to cause dissension and disarray among the dark East.

‘They must have had very great influence on the history of the Second Age and Third Age in weakening and disarraying the forces of the East who both in the Second Age and Third Age otherwise have outnumbered the West.

Given the mass destruction of the hobbits’ village, many fans have speculated The Dweller could Sauron, the evil commander who crafted the Rings of Power and used them to bend Middle-earth to his will.

Viewers believe The Dweller could be Annatar, an elf disguise Sauron used in order to trick Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) into crafting the Rings of Power.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to stream on Prime Video.
