Production on the new season of Top Boy was temporarily halted after ‘creative differences’ caused a dispute on set, Netflix has said.
The show’s lead stars Ashley Walters and Kano, real name Kane Robinson, have been busy filming season five of the hit British drama in recent months.
Top Boy follows Dushane (Walters) and Sully as they operate their drug dealing empire on an east London housing estate. The series originally aired on Channel 4 but was axed before being brought back to life by executive producer Drake for Netflix where it currently streams.
Addressing the reports of a dispute surrounding the script for season five, a Netflix spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘Producers Cowboy Films, Easter Partisan and Netflix temporarily paused production on the final season of Top Boy to allow for further creative discussion.
‘Production has now recommenced and the show will launch as planned in 2023.’
It’s understood that creative discussions on set happen all the time with new ideas meaning scripts are constantly evolving.

‘This not only expected, but that flexibility means that the show can evolve and become the best version of itself for its fans,’ a source told us.

Speaking to Capital Xtra in March, Ashley recalled: ‘So what happens is, I’ll come in in the morning, into my trailer and someone will knock… “Kano would like to see you”, and then I have to go and have an hour discussion with this guy about a scene that he’s rewritten, that he won’t show me.
‘So we’ll get into this scene and this guy will just come with a whole monologue, new scene! But, in his defence, some of those moments have been the most iconic scenes and have made me step up my game.’
Top Boy is available to stream on Netflix.
