American Idol star Willie Spence has died at the age of 23.

According to reports, the singer, who took part in season 19 of the singing competition, died in a car accident in Tennessee.

Katharine McPhee confirmed the news on her Instagram page, sharing an emotional tribute to the late musician.

‘I received very tragic news tonight,’ she penned. ‘Sweet @williespenceofficial passed away in a car accident. Only 23 years old.

‘Life is so unfair and nothing is every promised. God rest your soul Willie.

‘It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you.’

Spence’s cause of death has not been revealed.

The musician shot to superstardom last year after appearing on American Idol, blowing fans away with his incredible vocal talent.

In his first audition, he covered Diamonds by Rihanna, and told the judging panel – made up of Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan – about his love for performing.

‘I do this for me, but not only for me, I do this for my family,’ he said.

‘They’ve always supported me, they’ve been there from the very beginning.’

Spence sailed through to the live shows, and famously performed alongside McPhee in one round.

He ended the competition in second place, with Chayce Beckham eventually taking the crown in a tense finale.

Despite not winning the show, the Never Be Alone singer went on to forge a career in the music industry and was due to perform in London next month.

Just hours before news of his death emerged, Spence shared a video on Instagram as he belted out a stunning rendition of You Are My Hiding Place.

Fans and friends paid tribute in the comments section below, with McPhee penning: ‘You’re with Jesus now. God bless you. Thankful for the time we had.’

‘A special human was lost. Rest in piece my friend,’ a follower replied.

‘Omg I am so at a loss for words,’ one wrote. ‘Not you Willie! Wow… Rest in Paradise, king.’

Another commented: ‘Wowww my heart really hurts! May you rest in paradise Willie. Such a star! And a sweet soul! You will be missed!’

As an Instagram user added: ‘Literally tearing up, you were such a great gem I’m so so sorry FLY HIGH my friend! This is unbelievable.’
