Warning: spoilers ahead for Andor episode 6.

If Andor has been continually raising the bar every week – episode 6 has sent it soaring to the heavens and beyond.

The Star Wars series – which follows the journey of rebel Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) before the events of the 2016 film Rogue One – reaches a fraught point in the latest episode on Disney Plus, as the mission to steal from the Empire is officially a go.

Cassian, along with his comrades including Nemik (Alex Lawther) and Vel (Faye Marsay), manage to infiltrate the Imperial ranks to steal the payroll… but their efforts come at a huge, fatal cost to the group.

The explosive episode has been hailed by fans as one of the best pieces of storytelling ever created by Star Wars, from the incredible action and tension of the heist to the utterly magnificent cinematography.

Mission to steal from Empire blasts off

After months of prep from the majority of the team and Cassian’s quick homework on the ins and outs of the plan, the mission to steal a hefty payroll from the Empire goes into full swing.

Cassian – who’s going by the alias Clem – is part of the group pretending to be Imperial soldiers, while Vel and Cinta (Varada Sethu) head off separately to jam communications.

From the start, the mission is going almost exactly to plan, save for minor delays as the group get down to the vault and use their hostages to access the riches inside.

However, they do encounter gunfire, resulting in Taramyn (Gershwyn Eustache Jn) being killed just before they get away.

Celestial event creates stunning spectacle

The whole point of the mission taking place on this particular day was so that it could coincide with a celestial event known as The Eye of Adhani, where thousands meteors shoot across the sky at once.

While the Dhani people look up at the spectacle in wonder, the event provides the group with a narrow window of escape… albeit putting themselves at great risk at the same time.

Cassian manages to get the freighter carrying the payroll up into the air as planned, with a severely injured Nemik providing him with instructions on where to fly to avoid the Tie Fighters on their tail.

Viewers were left in awe by the ‘beautiful’ cinematography, with one tweeting: ‘The meteor showers, the lighting / FX work, the shot of the pilot getting into the Tie Fighter was like looking at concept art in the best way.’

Rebels escape but suffer tragic casualties

While we all knew Cassian would survive – given he goes on to appear in Rogue One set five years after the end of Andor – it was predictable that the mission’s success would come at a cost.

In addition to losing Taramyn, Nemik ends up dying from his injuries after being taken to a doctor, having been crushed by some of the payroll on the freighter and left unable to feel his legs.

While Nemik is being treated, Skeen (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) turns to Cassian and makes him a sketchy offer, suggesting that they ditch Nemik and Vel and split the money for themselves, 40million a piece.

Cassian shoots Skeen dead at the suggestion, before telling Vel that he’s leaving with just the money he was promised by Luthen (Stellan Skarsgård) when he was first brought on board for the mission.

Andor dubbed ‘best Star Wars since original trilogy’ after episode 6

The latest episode of Andor has been hailed across the Star Wars fandom, with some people saying it’s the best TV series ever to be released by the franchise and others saying its quality is at the same level of the original film trilogy.

‘Episode 6 of #Andor was the best episode until now. It was so good and I can’t wait to see what will happen next. I can say that almost everything from this episode was perfect. This is what a Star Wars TV series should be,’ one person tweeted.

‘Absolutely amazing and beautiful 6th episode of #Andor capping off the 2nd arc of the show. This episode is some of the best Star Wars I’ve seen,’ someone else said.

@StarWarsAndor is probably some of the best Star Wars I’ve seen since Rogue One. I can’t wait to binge all 12 episodes of Season 1. The story telling in this show is off the charts. #Andor #StarWars

That was absolutely brilliant. One of the best hours of #StarWars since 1983. The “Where Eagles Dare” of Star Wars, even. #Andor pic.twitter.com/i9QTbqA8N8

“Andor” is delivering on all fronts for me, it’s everything outside of the fantastic end that I wanted from “Rouge One”, this is easily the best Star Wars series so far since the original trilogy, it’s even better than The Mandalorian, which set the bar pretty high 😃 #andor

Star Wars at its best! 🤩🤩🤩🤩#Andor pic.twitter.com/WrulkA97Az

‘Seriously the best Star Wars since the original trilogy. I do not say that lightly,’ another wrote.

‘Top notch acting, writing, cinematography. If you haven’t watched yet because you’ve been burned by previous Disney SW shows, give it a shot. This show deserves all the support.’

Andor is available to watch on Disney Plus with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
