Måneskin frontman Damiano David has made light of the moment he was accused of doing drugs live on TV at Eurovision, quipping that the attention gave the band ‘free advertising’.

In 2021, Italian group Måneskin won the Eurovision Song Contest, resulting in the competition being held in Turin the following year.

While the musicians were lauded for their victory, their big night was slightly marred by an accusation made against Damiano.

During the live broadcast, he was filmed bending down by his table, leading some people to presume that he had been doing cocaine – although a drug test confirmed he had not been doing anything of the sort.

On Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain, the band joined Richard Madeley and Susanna Reid in the ITV studio to discuss their upcoming tour and next year’s Eurovision.

Richard recalled how Damiano was accused of doing drugs, impersonating the moment the singer bent down at his table.

The GMB co-host also brought up the claim made by French broadcaster Stéphane Bern that at the time, French President Emmanuel Macron supposedly contacted him urging him to ‘do something’ to ensure Måneskin were disqualified.

‘President Macron called the French commentator live and said you’ve got to tell the world that these guys are doing drugs. You did a drugs test straight away – you hadn’t done a thing!’ Richard recollected.

As Damiano shrugged with a wry smile, Richard continued: ‘What did you think about all that? Because there was a huge fuss about it.’

‘It was like of course in the moment I got a bit angry about it but actually it was very, very funny. It was also like free advertising,’ replied, before adding: ‘Thank you Macron!’

Following the allegation made against Damiano, he admitted in May 2021 that he felt ‘really offended’.

He explained that he’d been leaning towards broken glass that he’d spotted on his table, stating at the time: ‘I feel really offended, I think that these kind of things are outrageous. We’re young guys with huge passion for the music and this is actually overshadowing our win.’

Meanwhile, band member Victoria De Angelis confessed to Metro.co.uk that at one point, they had to ask Damiano if the video was ‘real’ or not.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
