David Beckham is returning to his roots and helping a team of young footballers who are facing relegation for a new Disney Plus documentary.

The superstar is at the centre of the upcoming documentary series Save Our Squad with David Beckham, which sees him mentor Westward Boys, a young grassroots team who are at the bottom of their league.

Based in East London, the Echo Premier League has special meaning for the footballing hero, who played in it himself when he was a young boy.

Alongside the head coaches, the father-of-four will be trying to help turn the Under 14 team’s fortunes around.

The trailer for the four-part series was released today, and shows the boys being surprised by Beckham as he enters their clubroom following another disappointing loss.

‘I grew up in East London. This is where it all began for me and that’s why I’m back,’ Beckham says before he meets the team.

His appearance clearly catches a few off guard, with one boy exclaiming ‘oh my lord’ as their idol walks in, while others aren’t fazed and joke around, with one joking: ‘I swear you missed a penalty’ as they all chat about his career.

As he mentors the young squad, Beckham takes the time to get to know them all, giving some plenty of encouragement as they struggle with self-doubt.

‘When I was your age I was always picked last because I was the smallest,’ he tells one player, before stressing to the whole team that ‘every-one of you has a part to play’.

Sharing stories from his own career, which spanned 20 years and saw him play for some of the most successful clubs in the world, Beckham aims to give back and teach them valuable lessons about practice, ambition and teamwork.

Doing their best to literally bend it like Beckham, the group are clearly inspired by the former England captain’s pep talks, as he imparts advice which includes making them consider how they deal with loss, and who they want to be as people outside of the game.

Away from the pitch, he also takes the time to get to know players and their families, and their hopes and concerns.

But, winning is still very much front of mind as he tells them that ‘the game is not over’.

With not a single win under their belt all season, will Beckham be able to turn the fortunes of the team around?

Save Our Squad with David Beckham is available to watch from November 9 on Disney Plus.
