National Television Awards honours Ukrainian Eurovision host Timur Miroshnychenko in ‘goosebumps’ moment after he broadcast from bunker-Emily Bashforth-Entertainment – Metro

In the midst of the chaos of this year’s National Television Awards, the event took time to honour Ukrainian broadcaster Timur Miroshnychenko.

Miroshnychenko famously reported on Eurovision 2022 earlier this year, commentating live from a bomb-proof bunker in an undisclosed location, amid attacks on the country from Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine’s equivalent of Graham Norton was overjoyed when Kalush Orchestra lifted the trophy, with the music extravaganza set to be held in the UK next year in the winning country’s honour after Sam Ryder placed second.

Appearing on stage at London’s Wembley Arena at the NTAs following rapturous applause, the TV presenter thanked the UK for its continued support.

He added that his country is ‘looking forward’ to the joint Eurovision in 2023, after Liverpool was announced as host.

Presenting the award for best TV presenter at the NTAs, he said: ‘Thank you for having me. First of all, on behalf of all Ukrainians, I want to say thank you Britain for your tremendous support.

‘Not only that night in May, but all 232 days of full-scale war. It’s priceless, really.’

Miroshnychenko added: ‘I’ve seen so many Ukrainian flags around the city. I’ve heard so many words of support and sympathy. We greatly appreciate it.

‘But at this very moment, despite the continued bombardment, the chance to break our spirits and launch us into darkness – we remain defiant.’

He concluded his powerful speech by saying: ‘I’d like to ask you to be with us, to stand with Ukraine and don’t get used to war. And, of course, we are looking forward very much to our joint Eurovision in 2023.’

Miroshnychenko then announced that Ant and Dec had won the award for best presenter for the 21st year running, which Stephen Mulhern collected in their absence, as the Geordie duo recently contracted Covid.

Also nominated in the category were Alison Hammond, The Chase’s Bradley Walsh, and Eurovision funny man Graham Norton, who remained in jolly spirits despite not scooping the coveted gong.

Following Miroshnychenko’s appearance at the NTAs, viewers at home have called for him to present Eurovision next year, with the hosts yet to be confirmed.

One wrote on Twitter: ‘Really hope Timur Miroshnychenko hosts Eurovision 2023… Very moving piece and he’d strike the perfect tone as host.’

‘Timur Miroshnychenko gave an impassioned and heartfelt speech of thanks to the British public at the #NTAs. Surely a #Eurovision 2023 host in waiting,’ penned another.

Reflecting on the emotional moment seeing the broadcaster on their screen, a third tweeted ‘Seeing Timur Miroshnychenko on UK television is one of those surreal goosebump moments. A shoe in to host #Eurovision 2023, surely.’

Details of Eurovision 2023 are yet to be finalised, after Liverpool beat Glasgow to host the annual contest.

The Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place at the Liverpool Arena, and broadcast live for those watching at home.

The Liverpool Arena, also known as M&S Bank Arena, is part of Exhibition Centre Liverpool and is located in central Liverpool, next to River Mersey.

With a capacity of 11,000, Eurovision fanatics will have a mighty job on their hands trying to score tickets, with the final set to take place on May 13.
