Loose Women presenter Brenda Edwards believes the upcoming season of The Crown should have been delayed out of respect for Queen Elizabeth II.

The Netflix series dramatises the life and reign of the Queen, with Imelda Staunton due to take over from Olivia Colman in the role of the monarch for the next series.

Series five is set to show the breakdown of King Charles’ marriage to Princess Diana, their divorce in 1996.

The Crown has been at the centre of controversy since its release in 2016, and after it was recently announced that the fifth chapter will premiere next month several fans believe it’s too soon following the Queen’s death.

During Thursday’s edition of the daytime programme, Brenda told co-stars Charlene White, Judi Love and Kelle Bryant: ‘Out of respect I think it should [have been delayed].

‘Things are still fresh, look the wound is open and you just poured that salt into the wound.’

She continued; ‘I just think a few months, next year, once they’ve settled in, it wouldn’t hurt it.’

TV personality Judi emphasised that people want ‘something to watch to take their mind of the stress of what’s been going on.’

Stephen Daldry, who has directed various episodes of The Crown, previously opened up about what would happen in the instance of the Queen’s death.

He said: ‘None of us know when that time will come but it would be right and proper to show respect to the Queen. It would be a simple tribute and a mark of respect. She’s a global figure and it’s what we should do.’

Stephen added: ‘She’s an extraordinary woman and people will be upset.’

The fifth series of the show will span the 1990s, including events from 1992 that saw Prince Andrew and King Charles separated from their wives, the Princess Royal divorcing her husband Mark Phillips, and part of Windsor Castle burn down.

During this period, Charles also admitted to Jonathan Dimbleby that he committed adultery with Camilla Queen Consort.

Princess Diana’s death in 1997 will not be covered until the sixth and final series.
