Kate Garraway has revealed her daughter Darcey’s amazing response to people congratulating her mum at the National Television Awards.

The teenager was her mum’s plus one at the glitzy ceremony on Sunday night and joined the Good Moring Britain presenter on stage as she accepted the authored documentary prize for the second year in a row, this time for Caring For Derek.

Reflecting on having her daughter there for her win during Monday’s episode of GMB, Kate said: ‘It was incredibly emotional – a last minute thought to bring Darcey because I found out I had a plus one.

‘It was really lovely because of course she’s right there at home, as is Bill – he’s a bit young. And so for her to come, and I just love the fact that she was just so excited to be there.

‘People were asking saying, “Are you proud of your mum?”, she kept saying, “Yes – and my dad!” Every single time!’

The GMB team were offering their congratulations to Kate on Monday morning, with co-host Ben Shephard hailing her a ‘champion’ and adding: ‘We’re thrilled to bits for Kate.’

The winner wasn’t convinced about being called a champion, but she quickly had to defend herself after Ben joked: ‘I was hoping we’d be able to show you the trophy, the National TV Award itself. However, Kate Garraway has lost it!’

She fired back: ‘No I haven’t lost it! This is the kind of libelous talk that – I have not lost it. I felt a bit awful bringing it in. It was right by the door and I thought, no, I don’t want people to think I’m showing off.’

However, Ben couldn’t help himself as he teased: ‘When you say “right by the door”, it wasn’t where you left it and suddenly, “Where’ve I put it?” ‘

‘It wasn’t,’ she protested. ‘That was everything else! My purse, my makeup bag, everything else. But the award was right there, I promise you!’

Not long after, someone appeared with the trophy to hand it to Kate after picking it up from her home.

‘Was it where I said? Yes! Thank you,’ she laughed. ‘So not lost, but just by the door. There you go.’

Kate won the award last year for a programme about her family’s life after her husband, former political adviser Derek Draper, spent a year in hospital being treated for Covid-19.

And on Sunday, she secured the prize for a second time for her follow-up programme, in which Derek and Kate shared insights into their family lives as he continued to battle long-term effects from the virus.

Collecting the award, she said: ‘We’re hoping he’s coming home again soon, but Darcey represents all the family, Billy, all the Drapers, everybody… I want to thank Derek for his incredible fighting spirit, we love you.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
