Some fans have their copy of Gotham Knights early, while others aren’t buying it at all due to its lack of a performance mode on consoles.

Warner Bros. Montréal’s Batman-less Batman game, Gotham Knights, will finally launch this week, but the title has already had something of a turbulent pre-release lifecycle.

Following a year-long delay, Warner Bros. opted to cancel the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game, making it a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC exclusive.

You may have assumed this would allow Gotham Knights to take full advantage of the capabilities of the stronger hardware. Except it turns out the game will be locked at 30 frames per second.

Unlike most current gen titles, that at least give players the option to run at 60fps at the cost of less detailed visuals, Gotham Knights won’t even have that.

This was confirmed by the game’s executive producer, Fleur Marty, in the official Discord channel, and later shared on social media.

‘I know many of you are wondering about the availability of a performance mode for Gotham Knights on consoles,’ she wrote.

‘Due to the types of features we have in our game, like providing a fully untethered co-op experience in our highly detailed open-world, it’s not as straightforward as lowering the resolution and getting a higher FPS.

‘For this reason, our game does not have a performance/quality toggle option and will run at 30fps on consoles.’

Big yikes

This seems to confirm that this won’t be the case for the PC version at least, although the idea of a game only running at 30fps on consoles that are meant to be as powerful as a PC won’t be palatable for everyone.

Many on Twitter are even saying they’ve cancelled their pre-orders, which seems a bit over the top given this is an open world co-op game that is already certain to be taking a serious toll on the hardware.

Especially for current gen only games

It’s why they avoid answering what there performance of the consoles would be for so long. It’s never good when they avoid certain questions

This news was also accompanied by the confirmation of a four-player mode that will be added post-launch. Despite Gotham Knights sporting a roster of four playable characters, its co-op play during the main campaign is limited to only two players.

The new mode, titled Heroic Assault, won’t let all four players explore the open world together and instead confines them to an arena-like environment consisting of 30 floors, each with different challenges to complete.

It will be added to the game on November 29, just over a month after launch, as a free update.

If you still plan on getting the game regardless, you’ll want to be wary of Gotham Knight spoilers online. An artbook containing unrevealed details has already shipped ahead of schedule and the same thing seems to have happened to the game itself.

Reddit user almarhuby shared a picture of their PlayStation 5 copy of the game and later posted gameplay footage via the Gotham Knights subreddit.

Said footage has already been taken down, but they’re likely not the only ones to have got their hands on the game. Which means you can expect someone to upload a cut scene compilation and/or the footage of the final boss within the coming days if it hasn’t happened already.

Gotham Knights launches for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on October 21.
