Is The Watcher a true story?-Stella Akinwumi-Entertainment – Metro

The Watcher is the latest Netflix thriller making waves as it’s currently leading the number one spot on the streaming platform.

The gripping seven-parter centres on married couple Dean (Bobby Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Naomi Watts) who, after moving into their dream home, receive threatening letters from a terrifying stalker known as The Watcher.

Purchased by a couple in 2014 for a cool $1.4million (£1.2million), scary letters from ‘The Watcher’ forced them to put the house on the market again in 2017, with the new owner also opening a letter from the stalker, whose identity still remains a mystery.

White Lotus actress Jennifer Coolidge plays Karen Calhoun, a realtor and a friend of Nora’s, although there is some friction among the pair as the newcomer settles into the idyllic suburb of Westfield.

But is the drama based on a true story, here’s everything you need to know.

Is The Watcher based on a true story?

Glee creator Ryan Murphy drew inspiration for the limited series from a chilling true story, which is based on events linked to the ‘Watcher’ house in New Jersey.

In a 2018 piece published by The Cut, Derek and Maria Broaddus moved into 657 Boulevard in 2014 before they received a string of chilling letters from an anonymous stalker claiming to be a protective ‘Watcher.’

The Broadduses were so reportedly so distressed by the letters, six months after they sealed the deal on the property, they put it back on the market. In the summer of 2019, the family sold 657 Boulevard for $959,000 (£840,956).

Derek branded the experience a “traumatic” one according to The Sun online and he’s reportedly convinced that the real-life Watcher is still out there.

The couple have also rejected television interviews as they wish to maintain their privacy and move on from the experience.

The Netflix programme made its debut on Thursday October 13, and fans are already freaked out by its premise.

‘If you haven’t had the chance to watch it yet, I highly recommend #TheWatcher on Netflix. It was so brilliant. The fact that it’s based on a true story makes it more scary. There’s a lot of unexpected twists and turns that you would not see coming,’ one person tweeted.

‘Finished binge watching #TheWatcher on Netflix. That is one hell of a creepy true story,’ another added.

The Watcher is available to stream on Netflix.
