Louis Tomlinson has revealed that he only expected One Direction to be on a break ‘for a year or two’ before getting back together.
The boyband, who scored four UK number one singles between 2011 and 2015, announced a hiatus in 2016 so that the boys could pursue other projects.
Since then, each of the members, also including Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik – who left in 2015 – have gone on to have solo success, with Harry Styles arguably the most successful of the group so far.
Louis, whose new album Faith in the Future releases next month, joined One Direction during their appearance on talent show The X Factor.
As of 2022, there don’t appear to be signs that the group will reunite any time soon, but Louis, 30, admitted that he was surprised by how long they’ve spent apart.
He said: ‘I definitely came out of the band crossing my fingers and thinking, “Oh, maybe it’s only going to be like a year or two.”‘

But, speaking to MusicWeek, he said that the picture became clearer after some initial confusion as to what their ‘indefinite hiatus’ really meant.
‘When we had the conversations, we never got any real clarity on what it was,’ he continued. ‘I remember going into those meetings and saying, “I understand. It’s not what I want – but all I would ask is just put a rough time on how long a break.”‘
Six years have passed since the band’s hiatus – following Zayn’s departure – and Louis confessed that it was initially hard for him to come to terms with it all.
‘It took me a long time to get over it because I didn’t really know what it was. I think that’s probably stopped me from going into my solo career,’ he said.
He did say that he would have welcomed some time away from One Direction if he had been given a timescale, or a provisional date for their reunion.

Louis also shared that, while the band were looked after by their managers, the demands of being an artist often got to him.
He added: ‘Being an artist is very individual and the pressures that you have day-to-day, no manager or record boss understands that.’
Louis had previously suggested that it would be ‘criminal’ if One Direction never reunited for a reunion tour.

His comments come after he kept his cards close to his chest regarding his friendship with former One Direction singer Zayn.
‘There’s been numerous times over the last couple of years where I’ve thought about Zayn and hoped he’s alright,’ he told The Zach Sang Show.
