Jay Blades has revealed he turned King Charles down for a ‘sleepover’ at Dumfries House three times, before finally accepting the invite.

The Repair Shop star is set to welcome the king for a special episode of the show to celebrate the BBC’s cententary.

Jay, who’s an ambassador for The Prince’s Foundation, recalled: ‘He invited me, probably three times, to go to Dumfries House, just to have a look around and have a sleepover.

‘But I was so busy I turned him down three times. And then I said to the missus, “Look, the fourth invitation came, we can’t ignore this one. I’ll be kicked out the country.”

‘So I went up there, filmed with him, and it was just a joy because basically, someone like me, from a council estate, and someone like him, from the Royal estate, we’ve both have the same interest.’

In August 2021, The Repair Shop squad which includes Jay, ceramics expert Kirsten Ramsay, horologist Steve Fletcher and furniture restorer Will Kirk were invited to Dumfries House in Scotland to meet the King, then the Prince of Wales, and learn about The Prince’s Foundation’s work in training the next generation of specialists.

Jay went on to say that the king’s episode of The Repair Shop will see him bring in items he was keen to get fixed, but also see them chat about shared interests including heritage crafts and The Prince’s Trust.

The team will fix two valuable items chosen by the King – an 18th century bracket clock from the collection at Dumfries House and a piece of pottery made for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee by Wemyss Ware, a renowned British ceramics company founded in 1882.

The programme was filmed between August 2021 and March 2022, before Charles became King following the death of his mother the Queen Elizabeth II.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV. The special episode of The Repair Shop will air on October 26 at 8pm on BBC One.
