Gangs of London actor Lucian Msamati, who plays gangster Ed Dumani in the Sky Atlantic drama, has defended the show’s epic action sequences.

The first series of the programme, created by The Raid’s Gareth Evans, was so violent it broke records for having the most killings on screen.

And, according to the Gangs of London cast and director, season 2, which picks up in the aftermath of the collapse of the Wallace empire, isn’t going to hold back.

Filmmaker Corin Hardy promised an even higher body count in the latest instalment in what he hopes will be ‘the most dangerous show on TV’, while Marian Wallace actor Michelle Fairley warned it would be ‘violence on steroids’.

The trailer for season 2 was also probably the goriest clip we’d ever seen, featuring an onslaught of gruesome murders.

Speaking ahead of the launch of the latest Gangs of London, Lucian, who was also in Game of Thrones, addressed the violence.

Asked about the action sequences, the actor said: ‘It’s gone a little deeper and it’s gotten a bit more nuanced and what is also great is that none of the violence is gratuitous.

Lucian said the violence wasn’t ‘gratuitous’ because it has ‘consequences’ (Credits: PA)

‘None of the characters comes out of the action sequences cleansed or pure; there’s always a consequence to it. It’s always rooted to the truth of the life they live.’

Lucian’s co-star Orli Shuka, who plays Albanian mafia boss Luan, previously revealed to Metro.co.uk he broke a rib while filming.

Lucian explained: ‘Later on, there’s another quite massive action sequence; just know that this man literally suffered for his art. He broke a rib and carried on because we had four days.’

Orli said that while he was wearing protective clothing, as the show has very strict safety procedures, he was accidentally kicked, causing the painful injury.

Lucian joked: ‘[The viewers] won’t know the true pain of those four days. But it’s going to look great.’

While Orli sustained an injury during filming Gangs of London 2, his co-star Waleed Zuaiter, who plays Koba, confessed he was unable to watch the first instalment.

The actor told Metro.co.uk: ‘There were scenes in the first season where I was doing this [puts hands over his eyes] and I was telling my wife, “Tell me when it’s over, tell me when it’s over, tell me when it’s over,” because it was really visceral and it was so real.’

Gangs of London season 2 premieres on Sky Atlantic and Now on Thursday.
