Fortnite has been revamped for spooky season, with Fortnitemares bringing tons of new quests for you to complete and win exclusive cosmetics.
Fortnitemares, Fortnite’s yearly Halloween-themed event, kicked off on October 19, and it’s proved to be all about DJ Lyka, a mysterious wolf-like character that appeared in the game earlier this week.
The first two Fortnitemares quests in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4 are ‘Dance on an Alteration Altar to get Howler Claws’ and ‘Hit an opponent while Wolfscent is active’, which once completed will let you equip some exclusive items and abilities.
By completing the first one, you’ll gain access to the Howler Claws, a cosmetic that gives you canine abilities, whereas the second one will help you in-game by giving you two extra melee abilities.
You’ll also earn 15,000 XP for completing each of these quests, which will come in handy when earning Battle Stars for this season’s battle pass.
Where are the Alteration Altars in Fortnite?
As the first quest suggests, you’ll need to dance on at least one Alteration Altar to get the Howler Claws.
All the spots are spread out across Fortnite’s map, so you can easily access them during the Fortnitemares event.
If you want to find an altar immediately, you should head to the Nothing Tree area, since that’s where you’ll find the most. Although you need to be careful as other players may have the same idea as you and kill you before you have the chance to complete the ritual.
However, if your shooting and building skills are better, you might be able to kill two birds with a stone and hit them while your Wolfscent ability is active, thus completing the second quest.
Here are all the Alteration Altars across the island:

Once you make it to one of these spots, look around for a small crystal-filled circle on the ground that looks like a mini launch pad – that’s an Alteration Altar.
All you have to do now is stand on it and press the button to ‘Perform the Ritual’, then select the ‘Ritual’ Emote from the wheel and the Howler Claws will be yours.
You can also get the Howler Claws by defeating an opponent that’s wearing a silver wolf mask, which they will then drop for you to pick up.

How do you activate Wolfscent during Fortnitemares?
If you want to activate the Wolfscent ability in Fortnite, all you have to do is hold down the aim button while wearing the Howler Claws. This is LT (left trigger) on Xbox, L2 on PlayStation, ZL on Switch, and right mouse click for PC players.
The ability lasts only a limited time before going into cooldown, so you better act quickly and hit any surrounding opponents before they strike you down first.
Wolfscent will also give you tracking vision, repeatedly putting a mark on enemies in a nearby radius. If no enemies are in the radius, it will immediately enter cooldown.
While having this ability equipped, you also gain access to two new melee moves, the Slash and Air Slash attacks.

If you’re the one being tracked, your ‘sixth sense’ will let you know with an audible heartbeat, getting louder and louder as an enemy approaches.
As you progress through the Fortnitemares quests, you’ll also unlock special rewards when you hit the 5, 13, and 25 quest-completed milestones.
With more and more quests rolling out every week, you’ll also get to use some unvaulted items, like Candy and the Pumpkin Launcher, to help you with your tasks and spread the spirit of Halloween.
Fortnitemares 2022 will run until Tuesday, November 1 at 6am GMT, and once it’s finished you might need to start preparing for… Winterfest.
