I worked at American Eagle – there’s a reason your jeans never fit anymore & it’s not because you gained weight

A FORMER American Eagle employee has shared why she believes customers have seemingly “gained weight” in American Eagle jeans.

Steph, who is currently an artist, responded to a TikTok prompt that asked for “secrets that only the employees know.”

She noted that the company has changed their jeans sizes to mark them smaller.

This, she explains, does not mean that you, as a customer, have gained weight.

“Their sizing changed so what used to be a 12 is now 14, what used to be a 14 is now a 16. 

“You have not gained weight, they just made it smaller,” she said.

Steph claims the move will “make women feel horrible about themselves,” because having to size up could play into body insecurities.

Many women have noticed the size change when they went to stores to shop for jeans.

Riley Bodley, in an interview with Today, said she noticed the change when she went shopping for her usual size 0 jeans but found that she was now a size 4.

When she got home to compare the two jeans from the same retailer, she found that her new pair of size 4 jeans were even smaller than her old AE size 0.

As more and more women noticed the dramatic change, American Eagle came under fire for their new sizing policies.

American Eagle’s shifting sizes

In 2020, Missy Rogers went viral when she shared a post on Facebook about her own experience.

In the post, Missy came to a conclusion that many women resonated with.

“My first impression when going into the store and trying on the size 4 (as I had in the past) was disheartening as I could not even get them past my knees,” she wrote. 

“Having to go up to a size 10 made me question just how much weight I gained, but once I brought the shorts home and compared, I realized that size is literally just a number.”

American Eagle’s Global Brand President, Chad Kessler, wrote a statement to People to address the backlash.

“We agree fully with Missy that women are so much more than numbers, which is why we are so strongly committed to body positivity,” he said.

“Like every retailer, we strive for consistency and clarity to help our customers make decisions.
